Responsibilities

The Database Administrator is responsible for the maintenance and lifecycle management of the company's database assets. The Database Administrator will also collaborate with peers, application and data solution development teams as well as infrastructure, networking, cyber and support teams to support the delivery and maintenance of high quality enterprise software solutions. Activities include installing software upgrades, production support, troubleshooting incidents, database performance optimization, monitoring and enhancing the database backup process, monitoring, testing and optimizing database high-availability and security configurations, design and development of new data storage systems and other. The Database Administrator will provide first level support and configuration of the company's database systems and tools. You will support the roadmap for RDBMS and other data storage technologies at OPPD.
While maintaining an in-depth understanding of Oracle and Microsoft RDBMS technologies, it is expected that you have a broad knowledge of the information technology field including but not limited to software development, infrastructure, networking, and security.
Database Administration:

  • Ensure design of current and future database solutions are aligned with the architectural direction
  • Create detailed technical specifications and design documents
  • Plan, procure, implement, operate and maintain database systems including software upgrades and hot fixes/patches
  • Monitor database system performance and capacity
  • Analyze and build database exception reports with recommendations for corrective actions
  • Develop scripts and interfaces for database administration process automation
  • Translate complex functional, non-functional and technical requirements into database KPIs:
    • Availability
    • Database system and OS specifications including CPU/RAM performance and I/O network throughput
    • Database size and growth over time
    • Recovery time
    • Query response time
  • Adapt database solutions to new requirements, as necessary.
  • Participate in the planning, implementation and execution of Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery programs
  • Provide production support and respond to off-hour calls for data storage related problems in a timely manner
  • Keep abreast of technological advances
  • Ensure compliance with enterprise database standards, software development standards as well as organization policies, department policies and industry regulations

Application and Data Solution Delivery: Engaged with all facets of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)

  • Build and implement high-quality data storage solutions based on design documents as well functional and non-functional requirement
  • Adhere to and support the continuous improvements of code management and DevOps processes
  • Perform unit and integration testing to ensure that database components perform according to requirements
  • Participate in creating documentation of data solution components
  • Participate in DevOps efforts to ensure effective and continuous integration processes
  • Participate in quality assurance and user acceptance testing efforts as needed
  • Participate in training, documentation and delivery efforts in concert with other team members
  • Participate/Collaborate with Infrastructure, Cyber Security, Application Delivery, Enterprise Architecture and Service Desk teams to ensure integrity, security, quality and availability of data solution delivery

Planning and Team Work Management: Play an active role in team work management for emerging and planned work items

  • Familiar with Agile Methodology
  • Actively participate in standup, sprint planning, backlog grooming, retrospective meetings
  • Provide high level and detailed estimates for work items
  • Decompose work items into epics, stories and tasks
  • Prioritize stories and associated tasks
  • Track and communicate on work progress
  • Collaborate with Product Owner, Scrum Master, Project Manager and team members to support the work management process


Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Information Systems; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in database administration and data storage development, with technical knowledge in the following disciplines: database administration, OS level configuration and administration, software engineering, database architecture, data integration, data processing and data warehousing
  • Proficient in database administration for Oracle or Microsoft RDBMS technologies
  • Proficient in database architectures and SQL standard languages T-SQL and PL/SQL
  • Proficient in Windows and Linux OS systems as well as in Shell and PowerShell scripting
  • Proficient in protocols such as DNS, LDAP, SMTP and HTTP
  • Understanding of Data integrity concepts and enterprise data standardizations
  • Familiarity with Data Warehousing systems
  • Familiarity with VMWare and SAN management/concepts
  • Familiarity with Agile Principles, Agile methodology frameworks and Software Development Life Cycle
  • Familiarity with source control and code management
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent technical and professional communication skills both verbally and in writing
  • Must be able to work independently and effectively collaborate with minimum supervision
  • Must possess exceptional organizational skills, creative problem solving skills, and flexibility in changing priorities
  • Must be a team player with the ability to share knowledge and develop peers for the overall benefit of the team and organization

Desired:

  • Certification in database administration for Oracle or Microsoft RDBMS technologies
  • Familiar with Big Data and NoSQL technologies
  • Familiar with Cloud platforms such as MS Azure and AWS
  • Familiar with system administration for Informatica PowerCenter and IBM Cognos
  • Working experience with Enterprise Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence tools e.g. Tableau, PowerBI, IBM Cognos, Informatica, SSIS
  • Working experience in the electric power utility industry


Closing Statement

Salary Grade: S4
Minimum: $81,427
Maximum: $122,141
