Summary:
The Data Services Librarian will participate in assessing campus needs, planning, and building initial research data services for the University Libraries. The position will provide training on the discovery, curation, analysis, preservation, and visualization of data through workshops and individual consultations. In collaboration with faculty, the position will support instruction on data literacy and the design of data-rich research projects. The Data Services Librarian will be a data generalist and engage with faculty and students across all disciplines. To further partnerships with faculty and students, this position will serve as the liaison librarian to one or more departments in the sciences.

This position is a part of a three-year pilot to reimagine the research and development lab, which is to be merged into the University Libraries. The reimagined lab will provide space, programming, and expertise in support of digital scholarship, data services, emerging technology, and entrepreneurship. Reports to the Head of Reference, Research, and Instructional Services (RRIS) and involves close collaboration with the lab director.

Qualifications:

Minimum

  • Master's Degree in Library Science or equivalent from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in library services or related experience
  • Experience or course work with data services topics.
  • Knowledge of data services concepts, such as: development of research data plans, research data repositories, data curation, data publishing, data visualization, open data, and data literacy.
  • Familiarity with data services in an academic library setting.
  • Commitment to remain current in a rapidly evolving field.
  • Willingness to take risks, to develop oneself into a new role and launch new services.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.


Desired

  • Experience working in an academic library environment.
  • Educational background in a science related discipline.
  • Experience with providing instruction or consultation with faculty and students on data literacy concepts.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance multiple assignments and projects.
  • Familiarity with funding agencies requiring data management plans.
  • Experience working with large data sets using tools such as OpenRefine, R, and Python.
  • Experience with data visualization using tools, such as Tableau.

Master's degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited program.
