Economic Data Reporter

The Wall Street Journal is seeking an experienced, digitally proficient Economic Data Reporter to join our economics team. This role bridges the gap between deep-dive data analysis and real-time economic reporting. The ideal candidate will possess a passion for high-impact journalism, a deep understanding of market-moving economic indicators, and the technical skills required to interrogate large datasets. You will be responsible for uncovering insights from core federal and state agencies (such as the Fed, BLS, BEA, and Census Bureau) to inform and captivate both general readers and professional investors in real time. You will also be on the hunt for insights in other, less routine data sets that may have hidden economic stories to tell.

You will:
  • Use programming languages and database tools to analyze large economic datasets, scrape websites, and automate data collection processes.

  • Plan, organize, and publish coverage of key economic indicators, exercising sharp news judgment to identify breaking themes and market-moving trends.

  • Write quickly and accurately under tight deadlines, distilling complex economic releases into clear, essential updates and comprehensive enterprise stories.

  • Partner with reporters, editors, and visual journalists across various bureaus and regions to create compelling, data-driven visual stories.

  • File state and federal public-records requests (FOIA) to obtain critical information, hold institutions accountable, and find exclusive angles on economic policy.

  • Deploy real-time content-management tools and stay abreast of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, to enhance our reporting capabilities.

You have:
  • A minimum of three years of experience working with data and economics/markets coverage in a fast-paced newsroom environment.

  • Strong skills in at least one programming language (e.g., Python or R) and database software (e.g., SQL), with the ability to analyze complex data using code.

  • A deep familiarity with major economic data releases (such as GDP, CPI, and employment reports) and the capacity to quickly assess their impact.

  • A well-honed sense of urgency and the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities calmly in a deadline-driven environment.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to explain highly complex economic concepts in plain written and visual language to a wide audience.

  • A knack for visualizing data with charts. Familiarity with with datawrapper is a plus.

  • Intellectual curiosity, flexibility in changing or handing off tasks, and a strong sense of collaboration. Familiarity with machine learning and AI concepts is a plus.

Base Pay Range: $120,000 - $140,000
