The Job Details are as follows:
Independently converts and/or catalogs manual records and/or library materials to supply metadata content for contracting libraries and publishers/vendors.
This service: 1) adds and/or enhances records in WorldCat, resulting in continued growth and value of the database; and, 2) sets user's holdings online; fostering inter library loan transactions.
Major Responsibilities:
- Creating metadata for both book and non-book titles, following descriptive cataloging rules according to AACR2/RDA and Library of Congress Rule Interpretations and/or LC-PSS PS, assigning subject headings, assigning Dewey, NLM, or LC call numbers.
- Meeting daily and monthly production and productivity goals in a cost-effective manner and meeting tight contractual deadlines on a monthly basis.
- Maintaining a quality level of 98% accuracy or better by monitoring all cataloging work.
- Independently assuming work flow management responsibilities for 3-5 or more concurrent projects and meeting tight contractual deadlines on a monthly basis.
- Answering some metadata and project specific questions and on rare occasions, acting as a liaison for client libraries.
- Occasionally reviewing the work of less experienced staff members.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma
- 2-3 years of experience as a Metadata Specialist I or equivalent, including independently creating metadata for books and/or one additional format.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to work effectively with other department staff, and with clients.
- Excellent project management and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines.
- Practical and theoretical knowledge of current cataloging practices and the OCLC-MARC formats.
- Experience assigning call numbers and subject headings in at least one scheme.
- Reading knowledge of English
Desired Qualifications:
- Library Technician Diploma or Master of Library of Science degree from an ALA accredited institution or comparable credentials, including two years of successful library experience in original cataloging.
- Experience reviewing the cataloging work of other staff.
- Reading knowledge of one or more non-English languages and/or subject specialization (e.g., music or law).
- Experience in creating metadata for non-book formats.
