The Role
CubeSat Systems Engineer
Redu Space Services (RSS) has a vacancy for a member of the Education Team at the European Space Agency Security and Education Centre (ESEC), in Transinne (GALAXIA), in the Ardennes region of Belgium.
The RSS provides to ESA Education Office a broad range of services at the ESA Education Training Centre in ESEC-Galaxia,such as:
  • Support to the ESA Academy, a programme with the objective to complement the portfolio of knowledge of university students to better prepare them for a space-related career
  • Instructional design and coordination support for the Training & Learning Programme, which delivers a portfolio of training courses, in all areas of ESA's expertise, from space law and entrepreneurship to spacecraft engineering and human space physiology.
  • Engineering support to hands-on space-related projects, in particular CubeSat mission design, satellite assembly and test campaigns in the frame of the Fly Your Satellite! programme.

In this position you will:
  • Support the various systems engineering activities of ESA Education's Fly You Satellite! (FYS) CubeSat programme, providing engineering guidance to university teams from early design stages up until launch and operations.
  • Support the operations and maintenance activities of the CubeSat Support Facility, including preparation and execution of test campaigns on CubeSat systems, subsystems, and other educational experiments.
  • Participate in the development and delivery of other satellite related activities of the ESA Academy, such as trainings on CubeSat Systems (e.g. CubeSat Summer School).

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
The main activities of the CubeSat Systems and Test Engineer include:
Support to Phase C (Design):
  • Coordination of and participation in system engineering activities in support of design, verification and mission operations by performing review of project technical documentation, requirements management, system modeling and analysis, technical budgets maintenance, and support to assembly integration and testing campaigns
  • Review of CubeSat and/or PocketQube design data packages, including requirements management, engineering documentation and project tracking
  • Preparation of ESA technical and management documentation for project reviews and launch campaigns, and for internal and outreach purposes
  • Liaising with ESA technical and quality experts for the follow-up of the design review & consolidation, anomaly investigations and resolution of technical issues
  • Project management and progress tracking in support of university teams

Support to Phase D (AIV):
  • Support of CubeSat CubeSat and/or PocketQube teams in the preparation of, and assist ESA specialists in the review of, CubeSat AIV and test documentation

Support to Phase E (Operations):
  • Coordination of and support to launch preparation activities and launch campaigns

Support to the CubeSat-related training activities and the overall objectives of the ESA Education Office:
  • In collaboration with the Training and Learning Programme, offering of engineering support for the development and undertaking of CubeSat-related training weeks
  • Contribution to outreach initiatives, including the promotion of educational opportunities and activities carried out by the ESA Education Office

COMPETENCIES
  • Be a national of a Member State of the European Union
  • Fluent in spoken and written English; Knowledge of French is an asset.
  • Effective communication and persuasion skills, both verbal and written with different functional teams (technical, commercial, administrative)
  • Candidates will be expected to have good organisational and reporting skills, as well as a strong proactive, self-starter and autonomous attitude, which is a must for the successful development and delivery of activities in parallel.
  • Strong capacity to learn and adapt as well as an excellent aptitude for resolving problems autonomously and diplomatically, as the successful applicant will be in direct contact with many different stakeholders, from a wide range of ESA staff at different levels, to representatives of academia, experts, industry, and ESA's international partners.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
  • Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Space Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent qualification.
  • Strong interest in education activities, and in the field of science and technology in general.
  • At least 3 years of experience in a space-related engineering field (e.g. systems, structures, etc).
  • Knowledge of ESA ECSS standards
  • Experience in PocketQube, CubeSat or SmallSat projects is a major asset.
  • Hands-on experience with space hardware and/or testing is a major asset.
