Job Summary:

To perform computerized tomography exams on patients under the supervision of a radiologist in accordance with UMMC policies and procedures. To maintain accurate patient records and prepare equipment for physician's use.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of computerized tomography exam procedures. Verbal and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills. Ability to explain exam procedures and alleviate patient anxiety.

Responsibilities:

Administers computerized tomography exams under a Radiologist's request and supervision including tomographs, fluoroscopes, and radiographs.

Greets patient and completes preliminary interview prior to exam.

Sanitizes examination rooms and prepares rooms with supplies and equipment.

Starts IV's for patients prior to scan.

Explains exam procedures to the patient in order to educate the patient and relieve anxiety.

Ensures compliance with safety measures.

Physical and Environmental Demands:

Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, frequent exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, constant work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, frequent bending, frequent lifting and carrying more than 100 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crawling, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional driving, occasional kneeling, constant pushing/pulling, constant reaching, frequent sitting, frequent standing, frequent twisting, and frequent walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)

Requirements

Certifications, Licenses, or Registration required: Medical Radiologic Technologist license from the Mississippi State Department of Health. Basic Life Support (BLS) from American Heart Association required post-hire within 90 days. Radiography (R) from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists required post-hire within six (6) months. Computed Tomography (CT) from American Registry of Radiologic Technologists required post-hire within twenty-four (24) months. 

Skills Required

  • Medical Radiologic Technologist license from the Mississippi State Department of Health
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) from American Heart Association (required post-hire within 90 days)
  • Radiography (R) credential from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (required post-hire within six months)
  • Computed Tomography (CT) credential from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (required post-hire within twenty-four months)
  • Knowledge of computerized tomography exam procedures
  • Verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills; ability to explain procedures and alleviate patient anxiety
  • Ability to start IVs for patients prior to scan
