Quantum Computing
The Role
Lead testing and validation of prototype quantum hardware at millikelvin temperatures. Develop and maintain cryogenic measurement infrastructure (microwave, RF, amplifiers, interconnects), design experimental setups, analyse test data, produce technical reports, coordinate component installation within cryostats, implement improvements, and mentor junior engineers.
Summary Generated by Built In

At OQC, we aren’t just theorising about the future; we’re building it. Born from a philosophy of bold innovation, we’ve successfully transitioned quantum computing from an academic dream into a commercial reality.

The most exciting thing is that we’re just getting started and we’ve recently closed our £260 million Series C funding round – the largest fundraise ever completed by a quantum computing company in Europe.

The Purpose

As a Cryogenic Measurement Engineer, you will play a critical role in validating the next generation of quantum computing hardware.

Working at the intersection of quantum technology, cryogenics and advanced measurement systems, you'll ensure new hardware performs reliably in real-world quantum computing environments while helping shape the tools and processes that accelerate innovation across the business.

The Role

We're looking for a hands-on engineer or experimental physicist with experience in cryogenic measurements and hardware characterisation. You'll lead the testing and validation of prototype quantum hardware at low temperatures, develop advanced measurement infrastructure, and collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to drive improvements across our quantum computing stack.

What You'll Be Working On
  • Install and validate prototype quantum hardware within OQC's quantum computing systems, performing low-temperature testing to verify performance against design expectations.
  • Develop, maintain and improve cryogenic measurement infrastructure, including microwave, high-speed and high-density circuits, amplifiers and interconnects.
  • Design and implement new measurement techniques and experimental setups to characterise emerging hardware technologies.
  • Analyse test data, generate clear technical reports and communicate findings to development teams and key stakeholders.
  • Coordinate component installation schedules within cryogenic refrigeration systems, ensuring readiness ahead of system cool-downs and collaborating with laboratory, control systems and science teams.
  • Provide data-driven recommendations to improve deployed systems and independently implement agreed enhancements.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, project plans and testing procedures while supporting and mentoring junior engineers within the team.
What We're Looking ForExperience
  • Practical experience in experimental design, testing and measurement.
  • Experience working with cryogenic systems and dilution refrigerators.
  • Experience operating within a fast-paced, agile engineering environment.
  • Familiarity with testing and validation processes in a commercial or industrial setting.
Skills
  • Strong understanding of DC and RF characterisation techniques and associated instrumentation.
  • Advanced knowledge of material properties at cryogenic temperatures.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a methodical and analytical approach.
  • Ability to work autonomously while effectively managing priorities and timelines.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to present technical findings to diverse stakeholders.
Qualifications
  • MSc in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Radio Engineering, or a related discipline, combined with relevant industry or research experience.
The 'Nice-to-Haves'
  • Experience in radio frequency metrology.
  • Experience measuring quantum technologies, superconducting devices, or cryogenic RF components for quantum computing or sensing applications.
  • Python programming or similar coding experience.
  • Electrical or thermal modelling experience.
  • PhD (experimental) in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Radio Engineering, Quantum Technologies, Low Temperature Condensed Matter Physics, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated track record of innovation within advanced hardware or research environments.
Why Join OQC

You will join a world-class team at the forefront of the next computational era. We offer a culture of bold innovation, the chance to work with unique lab infrastructure, and the opportunity to see your work redefine the limits of computation.
