The Manager of Credit
Underwriting is responsible for leading the daily operations, performance, quality,
and operational execution of the Credit Underwriting department. This role
leads a team of commercial underwriters while balancing production
expectations, customer experience, portfolio quality, and risk mitigation.
The ideal candidate is an
experienced commercial credit professional and people leader who can
effectively manage underwriting operations in a fast-paced environment while
developing high-performing teams, strengthening underwriting quality, driving
process improvements, and partnering cross-functionally throughout the
organization.
This role
plays a critical part in supporting the organization’s growth strategy by
ensuring sound credit decisions, maintaining operational efficiency, and
fostering a strong underwriting culture centered around accountability,
consistency, collaboration, and customer experience.
Responsibilities:
• Lead, coach, and develop a team of commercial underwriters through consistent feedback, mentorship, and performance management
• Foster a positive, collaborative, and accountable team culture focused on both performance and employee engagement
• Conduct regular coaching sessions, performance reviews, and developmental discussions with underwriting staff
• Recruit, interview, onboard, and train new underwriting team members
• Oversee day-to-day underwriting operations, workflow distribution, and submission pipeline management
• Monitor underwriting queues to ensure balanced workload allocation and timely movement of files through the process
• Drive departmental performance against Service Level Agreements (SLAs), productivity expectations, and quality standards
• Identify operational bottlenecks and implement process improvements to improve efficiency and consistency
• Ensure underwriting decisions are well-documented, supported, and aligned with company credit policy
• Serve as an escalation point for complex underwriting scenarios, exception requests, and elevated-risk transactions
• Ensure consistent application of underwriting guidelines, lending policies, and risk frameworks
• Balance customer experience and growth initiatives with sound portfolio risk management
• Ensure underwriting staff remain informed of current credit policy updates, procedural changes, and risk trends
• Develop and maintain underwriting procedures, job aids, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
• Collaborate with Sales, Operations, Risk, Technology, and Executive Leadership to support organizational goals
• Participate in strategic discussions surrounding credit policy, operational scalability, fraud prevention, and customer experience
• Support organizational initiatives related to automation, efficiency, and portfolio quality improvements
• Ensure adherence to company policies, underwriting authority levels, and applicable regulatory requirements
• Support internal audits, quality reviews, and compliance initiatives
• Perform additional duties, responsibilities, and special projects as assigned or deemed appropriate by the organization
RequirementsRequired
• 2+ years of leadership or people management experience within underwriting, credit, or financial services
• 5+ years of commercial underwriting or business lending experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Accounting, Economics, or related field preferred
• Equivalent relevant industry experience may be considered in lieu of degree requirements
• Strong understanding of commercial lending, cash flow analysis, bank statement analysis, fraud prevention, and risk-based underwriting
• Experience reviewing, evaluating and making risk-based decisions within an approved authority matrix required
• Experience operating in a fast-paced production environment with defined SLA expectations
• Experience partnering cross-functionally with Sales, Operations, Risk, and Technology teams
Preferred • Experience within fin-tech, small business lending, MCA, or alternative commercial finance environments
• Experience reviewing and managing higher exposure small business credit transactions and commercial funding ranges, including large funding requests (e.g. 1mil+)
• Experience leading operational or process improvement initiatives
• Experience utilizing Salesforce or comparable CRM/workflow management systems within a lending or financial services environment
