The Cost Accountant I is responsible for supporting manufacturing accounting activities by maintaining accurate product costing, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and production routings. This position assists with inventory and production cost accuracy, processes scrap transactions, closes production jobs, and supports month-end financial close activities. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, analytical, and eager to build a career in manufacturing accounting.Essential duties and responsibilities:Product Costing & Item Setup
  • Review, maintain, and validate Bills of Materials (BOMs) and production routings for finished goods.
  • Assign appropriate posting groups and establish accurate product costing for new items.
  • Support product costing and quoting processes by ensuring manufacturing data is complete and accurate.
  • Assist in maintaining the integrity of product cost information within the ERP system.
Scrap Accounting
  • Process scrap credits and post scrap shipments in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Maintain documentation and records related to scrap transactions.
Production Job Costing
  • Review completed production jobs to compare actual material usage against expected consumption.
  • Analyze labor and production time variances and make appropriate adjustments when necessary.
  • Close production jobs after ensuring costing accuracy.
  • Assist in identifying and resolving production cost discrepancies.
Month-End Close & Financial Support
  • Assist with month-end closing activities related to inventory and manufacturing costs.
  • Support inventory reporting and account reconciliations.
  • Prepare reports and analyses as requested by the VP of Finance.
  • Assist with special projects and ad hoc financial reporting.
Continuous Improvement
  • Participate in initiatives to improve costing accuracy and manufacturing processes.
  • Support cost reduction and operational efficiency efforts across manufacturing and the supply chain.
  • Recommend process improvements that strengthen internal controls and reporting accuracy.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 0–3 years of accounting experience, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
  • Recent graduates with relevant internships or manufacturing accounting coursework are encouraged to apply.
  • Basic understanding of standard costing, Bills of Materials (BOMs), production routings, inventory accounting, and manufacturing processes.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.
  • Experience with ERP systems and manufacturing cost accounting software is preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Skills Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • 0–3 years of accounting experience, preferably in a manufacturing environment
