Job Summary:
Blavity Inc. is seeking a dedicated and skilled Copy Editor to join the team at AFROTECHTM. The Copy Editor will play a crucial role in shaping editorial content, ensuring news stories are well-written, accurate, and engaging to maintain high journalistic standards, as well as assisting in copy editing, fact-checking, and publishing editorial content.
This is a (W2) contractor role that reports directly to the Managing Editor, AFROTECH™.
Contractors will be responsible for providing their own equipment, including but not limited to laptop computers, cell phones, or any other electronic equipment required to perform their role.
Responsibilities:
- Review and copy-edit news articles, reports, and interviews for grammar, style, accuracy, and clarity
- Ensure that content aligns with Blavity’s editorial style guide and standards, including conducting regular quality control checks
- Fact-check and verify the accuracy of news stories' information, sources, and data
- Collaborate with writers and editors to improve the overall quality of content
Qualifications:
- Education: B.A. in Journalism, Communication, or a related field
- Required Experience:
- 2+ years experience in a newsroom environment
- Preferred Experience:
- Previous experience in news writing, copy editing, and/or journalism
- Technologies: Fluent in WordPress, Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Asana, and/or comparable project management suite
- Additional Qualifications:
- High-energy, company-first, positive attitude; must be motivated to work hard in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent communication and analytical skills; outgoing and sociable; willing to wear multiple hats
- Naturally detail-oriented, with an obsessive need to document and communicate findings
- In-depth knowledge of tech, business, and innovation news, especially related to the Black community
- A healthy appreciation of GIFs and Black culture

- This is a fully remote, U.S.- based role. Occasional travel may be required.
- Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S.
- Candidates must be available to work in alignment with the Eastern Time Zone.
- The hourly rate for this role is $28.
