Summary of Essential Functions

  • Must be able to independently complete all duties of a hospital clinical pharmacist.
  • As a member of the pharmacy management team, the coordinator directly supervises pharmacy personnel during daily operations. Recruits, promotes, disciplines, and terminates pharmacy staff. 
  • Develops job descriptions and performance standards. Evaluates and counsels’ staff on their performance.  This includes routine feedback and coaching as well as annual performance evaluations.
  • Leads by example holding self and others accountable to the organization’s behavioral standards and the practice standards of the department.
  • Works with other department coordinators, the pharmacy clinical manager, pharmacy operations manager, and the director of pharmacy to develop, maintain, and improve pharmacy operations.  Includes, but is not limited to, staff scheduling, workflow, assigned duties, etc.
  • Ensures compliance with hospital policies and procedures that apply to pharmacy services.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, and regulations.

Educational Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. 
  • Graduate of an ACPE accredited School of Pharmacy with a BS Pharmacy or higher degree.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. 

Licensure and Certifications  

  • Currently licensed to practice pharmacy in the state of Texas.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Must have a minimum of 3 years of practice experience as a pharmacist.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal direct supervision, handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule, ability to set priorities, and make critical decisions and respond quickly to emergency requests. 
  • Perform work accurately with attention to detail within specified times. 
  • Must be able to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule.  Hours may be long and irregular, includes evenings, weekends and holidays as necessary.
  • Fosters a team environment by providing orientation and training to new team members. 
  • Must be able to meet the pharmaceutical care needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric, psychiatric, oncology, obstetric, chemically dependent, rehabilitation and skilled-nursing patients.
  • Strong analytical/problem-solving skills, ability to integrate knowledge with job situations.
  • Excellent oral/written communication skills. Ability to strongly communicate and interact with all levels of professionals, including but not limited to physicians and nursing personnel, managers, various support staff departments, physician offices, in a non-confrontational manner. Must be able to communicate complex regulatory and clinical information in understandable terms.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.  Must be able to communicate effectively with various System audiences.

Physical Requirements

  • May be expected to lift over twenty five (25) pounds.

  • Hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity with substantial movement of wrist and/or fingers.
  • Walking and climbing to accomplish tasks.

  • Potential for exposure to hazardous and toxic substances (including chemotherapeutic, cytotoxic drugs and cleaning solutions), sticks or cuts by needles and other sharp items. 
  • Must be able to physically operate the equipment used in the job.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Clinical Role Model – Demonstrates an advanced level of clinical skills and the ability to support others to achieve the delivery of quality care. Functions as a resource person for staff members and assists in necessary education of individual members of the pharmacy technician staff. Assumes responsibility for the overall quality of pharmacy care provided by the department in collaboration with the managers & director.
  • Leadership – Demonstrates interpersonal skills and competency in leadership, supervision, and management of staff. Assumes responsibility for direction and coordination of all functions in the absence of the managers or director.
  • Administrative – Demonstrates excellent skills in planning, organizing, and managing personnel resources in a cost effective and productive manner for the operational area of the pharmacy department. Plays an active role in scheduling and ensuring the needs are met for the department in terms of staffing.
  • Prepares and dispenses drug orders per physician request according to established policies, procedures and protocols. Interprets drug orders and transcribes to computerized patient medication profiles accurately. Maintains accurate, complete pharmacy patient medication profiles. 
  • Compounds and dispenses pharmaceuticals including sterile products, chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition products accurately.
  • Issues controlled substances to patient care areas and maintains records as required by law. 
  • Contributes to the quality and effective operation of the department. Supervises and directs pharmacy support personnel. Verifies the daily activities of pharmacy technicians. Participates in the performance appraisal of pharmacy support personnel. 
  • Organizes and prioritizes work assignments.  Ensures pharmacy services are provided in a timely manner. 
  • Answers the telephone, identifying self and department. Directs calls to appropriate personnel. Answers requests at the window and makes STAT deliveries to patient care areas when requested. Organizes and prioritizes work assignments. 
  • Continuously monitors volume/workload, assists with directing staff in managing the workload for optimal patient care and efficiency (making sure ‘Take Home scripts’ are checked/sent in a timely manner to aid in smooth patient discharge)
  • Maintains logs, records, and other required documentation accurately. Files in appropriate locations. 
  • Participates in the quality improvement activities of the department. Completes all assigned medication storage area inspections in a timely manner. Conducts quality monitors, collects data, and completes documentation, as assigned. Keeps pharmacy areas clean, neat, and well organized. Keeps pharmacy equipment and areas clean, neat, and well-organized.

Skills Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Graduate of an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy
  • Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or higher degree

  • Current license to practice pharmacy in Texas
  • Minimum of 3 years of pharmacist practice experience
