Role Overview for Controls Engineer
As a Controls Engineer, you'll play a key role in deploying utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across North America, supporting projects from initial design through commissioning and long-term operation.
You'll work closely with internal engineering teams, equipment vendors, EPCs, utilities, project developers, and customers to ensure control systems are designed, integrated, and delivered successfully. From reviewing control philosophies and validating network architectures to troubleshooting communications and supporting commissioning activities, you'll help ensure every project performs safely, reliably, and efficiently.
If you enjoy solving complex technical challenges, collaborating across multiple disciplines, and seeing your work come to life in the field, this role offers the opportunity to make a direct impact on the future of renewable energy while working on some of the industry's most advanced utility-scale energy storage projects.
What You'll Be Doing as a Controls Engineer
- Review project contracts and vendor agreements for controls-related requirements and ensure alignment throughout project execution.
- Review and validate project design packages, including electrical drawings, data flow diagrams, network designs, signal mappings (analog, Modbus, DNP3), electrical power models, and control narratives.
- Maintain and organize technical documentation within SharePoint while coordinating documentation flow with vendors and project stakeholders.
- Develop batch scripts and automation tools to streamline data collection and improve operational efficiency.
- Serve as a key technical resource for customers, EPCs, utilities, equipment vendors, and internal project teams throughout project execution.
- Troubleshoot network and communications issues within VPN-secured environments.
- Respond to customer and operator requests regarding system modifications, troubleshooting, and control system enhancements.
- Support site commissioning activities and provide technical expertise for all controls-related tasks.
- Ensure all activities are performed in compliance with engineering standards, project requirements, safety protocols, and company policies.
What You'll Bring to The Position
- Educational background in Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience working with industrial control systems within electrical generation, renewable energy, or similar power system environments.
- Demonstrated experience with industrial communication protocols including Modbus, DNP3, and TCP/IP.
- Strong understanding of industrial networking, including IP addressing, subnetting, switches, firewalls, VPNs, and network communications.
- Experience with SCADA systems, plant control systems, or utility-scale automation.
- Experience working with inverter-based resources (IBR) such as Battery Energy Storage Systems, solar, or other renewable generation technologies is considered an asset.
- Exposure to substations, protective relays, and transformers is preferred.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills with the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to travel up to 10–15% nationally and internationally to support project sites and vendor facilities.
