Description

The Controls and Automation Test Engineer at Hyper Solutions plays a critical role in designing, building, and validating control systems that power Hyper’s data center infrastructure products. This position is responsible for developing and testing the intelligent control layer across products such as PDUs, RPPs, and switchboards, ensuring systems are reliable, safe, and ready for deployment in mission-critical environments.

This role spans the full lifecycle of control system development, from integrating sensors and configuring controllers to executing full system builds and validating performance through structured testing. Working in Hyper’s engineering lab, you will collaborate with electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing teams to develop systems that make Hyper’s products increasingly intelligent and software-defined.

This position is well-suited for a hands-on controls engineer who thrives in a lab environment, enjoys building and testing real systems, and is comfortable working at the intersection of hardware, software, and industrial infrastructure.

Core Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and validate control systems for power infrastructure products including PDUs, RPPs, and switchboards
  • Develop and configure HMI applications including screen design, alarm management, trending, and operator workflows
  • Install, configure, and test power meters, gateways, and controllers, ensuring proper communication and performance
  • Select, mount, and wire sensors including current transformers, voltage transducers, temperature probes, and environmental sensors
  • Execute full system builds integrating sensors, controllers, and HMIs into complete, functional products
  • Build and test hardware and software prototypes for new product development and customer-specific solutions
  • Execute Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) to validate system performance
  • Develop and maintain control system documentation including wiring diagrams, I/O lists, and test procedures
  • Collaborate with engineering and manufacturing teams to ensure systems are manufacturable and field-ready
  • Follow and enforce electrical safety practices including LOTO procedures and arc flash safety standards

Additional Responsibilities

  • Support troubleshooting and root cause analysis of control system issues from the field
  • Contribute to the development of internal standards, lab infrastructure, and testing methodologies
  • Participate in safety reviews and identify potential hazards in product designs and test setups
  • Partner with engineering and service teams to improve system reliability and performance
  • Assist in refining sensor strategies and control system requirements based on real-world usage

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with industrial control systems including controllers and HMIs
  • Experience developing HMI applications including screen design, scripting, and alarm configuration
  • Working knowledge of industrial protocols such as Modbus, BACnet, OPC-UA, and SNMP
  • Experience configuring and commissioning power metering and monitoring equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, and wiring documentation
  • Experience executing system-level and component-level testing including FAT and SAT
  • Strong understanding of electrical safety practices including LOTO and NFPA 70E

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with data center power infrastructure such as PDUs, UPS systems, or switchgear
  • Familiarity with industrial gateway platforms such as Red Lion, Kepware, or Ignition
  • Exposure to condition-based monitoring or predictive maintenance systems
  • Understanding of OT/ICS security principles or IEC 62443 frameworks
  • Experience working in lab environments building and testing physical systems

What Success Looks Like

  • Control systems are reliable, fully tested, and meet performance and safety requirements
  • Products are delivered with fully integrated and validated sensor, control, and HMI systems
  • Testing processes are structured, repeatable, and identify issues before deployment
  • Cross-functional teams collaborate effectively to deliver manufacturable and field-ready systems
  • Safety standards are consistently upheld across all lab and testing activities
