Albert‘s mission is to digitalize the world of chemistry, using data and machine learning to drastically accelerate the invention of new materials. Our platform helps R&D organizations achieve a structured data foundation, digitalize their formulation and testing processes, and empower scientists to innovate faster, smarter, and at scale.

We’re seeking an experienced and strategic Controller to be Albert’s first dedicated accounting hire. This role will build and lead the accounting function from the ground up, taking ownership of our core financial operations, developing scalable processes, and setting the foundation for a global finance organization that can support Albert’s rapid growth.

Own core accounting processes from day one:

• Transition day-to-day accounting processes from our outsourced accounting partner, including accounts payable, customer invoicing, payroll coordination, and monthly close.
• Develop clear, efficient workflows that ensure accurate, timely, and compliant financial reporting each month.

Establish and lead a global accounting function:

• Build and document accounting policies and procedures that work across multiple entities and currencies.
• Oversee all accounting operations for Albert’s subsidiaries in India and Japan.
• Design and manage consolidation processes for multi-entity reporting, ensuring compliance with both U.S. GAAP and local statutory requirements.
• Collaborate with local finance partners and auditors to maintain compliance with international tax and regulatory filings.

Drive systems and process transformation:

• Lead an early strategic project to evaluate, select, and implement a new ERP system that will scale with Albert’s global operations.
• Identify automation opportunities in the accounting workflow to reduce manual effort and improve accuracy in reconciliations, revenue recognition, and reporting.
• Work closely with FP&A and operations teams to integrate systems and data flows, ensuring financial information is consistent, accessible, and actionable.

Partner across the business to enable growth:

• Serve as a trusted advisor to company leadership on accounting, policy, and compliance matters.
• Partner with the FP&A team to support budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis, providing clarity and transparency on financial performance.
• Collaborate with Legal, People, and Operations to manage vendor contracts, payroll, and equity-related accounting.
• Lead preparations for annual audits and support fundraising and board reporting with accurate, audit-ready financials.

Build the foundation for a future team:

• Define the structure and roadmap for the accounting organization as Albert scales.
• Hire, train, and develop future team members who share a commitment to excellence, rigor, and partnership.
• Foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement within the finance function.

• CPA or equivalent certification, with a strong foundation in U.S. GAAP and technical accounting.
• 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership in a high-growth SaaS or technology company.
• Proven track record of standing up accounting operations from scratch — designing processes, implementing systems, and building teams.
• Deep experience in core accounting functions including AP, AR, payroll, revenue recognition, consolidations, and monthly close.
• Experience managing or consolidating international subsidiaries and navigating multi-currency environments.
• ERP expertise, ideally with Quickbooks (our current ERP), and a history of leading or supporting ERP evaluations and implementations.
• A practical, hands-on approach to problem solving and process improvement.
• Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to partner across teams and time zones.
