The Role: 

As the business grows in complexity and size, the Controller will be critical in building the accounting processes, infrastructure, and team to ensure that Sunday is able to scale and meet the lofty goals we have set for ourselves. Month-end close, financial reporting, internal controls, audit supervision, tax compliance, AP/AR management, bank covenant compliance, and broad partnership across the organization should come naturally to this person. 

 

This role will take a proactive approach to partnering with cross-functional teams to understand business initiatives and how they impact the accounting and finance function; this person should not expect to hide behind spreadsheets. A strong ability to work across the organization (among Finance, Tech, Ops, Retail, Marketing, etc.) will be an integral part of this role. Intellectual horsepower and top-notch accounting skills are critical in this role; and the individual must be comfortable in a fluid environment and be adaptable to change. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and manage accounting team to ensure efficient, accurate, and timely month-end close process
  • Review and/or prepare monthly reconciliations to ensure accurate presentation of financial statements
  • Manage corporate compliance including payroll, insurance, equity maintenance, valuations, annual reports, and debt facility compliance
  • Own process around payroll, state & federal tax reporting, and partner with Human Resources to ensure compliance standards are met 
  • Identify opportunities to improve internal processes and controls to maximize protection of company assets, policies, procedures, and workflows
  • Lead external audit team to successful completion and remediate any deficiencies as needed
  • Oversee tax compliance program and manage relationship with tax partners, including researching applicable tax credits and ensuring ongoing compliance with sales & use tax collection and filing through Avalara
  • Own overall general accounting, including the GL, AP, AR, and the integrity of the financial statements
  • Create and document key accounting procedures related to revenue recognition, inventory accounting, costing, leases as they relate to specific GAAP measures
  • Partner with the Data Science & Analytics team to create innovative reporting around Sunday’s financial health
  • Provide trusted advice on all finance and accounting matters including compensation programs, capital raises, debt financing, valuations, account structure, and software implementations 
  • Support leadership in due diligence and external reporting requirements for the board, investor group, and others

 

About You:

  • Degree in Accounting or Finance, CPA strongly preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting best practices and in-depth knowledge of GAAP, with a proven ability to provide sound and ethical financial counsel to leadership
  • 8+ years of experience in accounting, preferably in Consumer-Packaged Goods (CPG) environment with inventory experience
  • Familiarity with deferred revenue business models nice to have, ability to quickly learn a must have
  • Systems savviness, including analytics, ERP, and inventory systems; ability to identify system inefficiencies and propose & implement alternative solutions
  • Ability to think strategically about the direction of the accounting function at Sunday while getting your hands dirty in the details
  • You have strong experience developing the accounting vision and setting the direction for teams that you have managed. 
  • Previous management experience: you are an empathetic and inspirational leader - you know how to support your team and help them achieve their performance goals. 
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills - you know how to align departments towards common goals, work as a team, and have open and honest dialogue
