Job Summary

The controller position reports to the President / COO and is primarily accountable for the accounting operations of the company and with providing key financial analysis to ownership for the purposes of company decision making. Primary activities include the production of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of internal controls designed to mitigate risk, enhance the timeliness and accuracy of the company’s reported financial reports/results, and ensure that reported results comply with accepted accounting principles.

The controller assembles, reviews, and analyzes a combination of operating and financial data to assess the performance of all company operations. Prepares and distributes internal operating reports for senior and divisional management, identifies areas in need of internal process improvement and assists in the development of plans designed to optimize operating results.

The successful candidate will be a hands-on, and participative manager and will lead and develop a team approach to support the areas of accounting, finance, cash management, budgeting, and administration.

Description of Duties

Key Responsibilities

  • Leads the company’s accounting function, internal controls, and the accounting support staff.
  • Develops and updates financial analytic tolls, models, and projections
  • Issue timely, complete, and accurate financial statements.
  • Clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements including division level results.
  • Recommend benchmarks against which to measure the performance of company operations.
  • Calculate and issue financial and operating metrics.
  • Assist in managing the production of the annual budget and periodic forecasts.
  • Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to management.
  • Provide financial analyses, as needed, for capital investments, pricing decisions, contract negotiations and other decision making.
  • Coordinate the provision of information to external accountants for the preparation of annual reviewed financial statements and tax returns.
  • Monitor debt levels and compliance with debt covenants.
  • Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.
  • Create and maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures.
  • Manages outsourced functions.
  • Oversee the operations of the accounting department, including the design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department’s goals and objectives.
  • Oversee the accounting operations of each division, subsidiary and/or affiliated companies, especially their control systems, transaction-processing operations, and policies and procedures.
  • Supervise the accounting staff activities.
  • Manage organizational cash flow and forecasting.
  • Provides support to owner’s companies.
  • Ensure that accounts payable are paid in a timely manner.
  • Ensure that all reasonable discounts are taken on accounts payable.
  • Ensure that accounts receivable is collected promptly.
  • Ensure payroll is done in a timely manner.
  • Ensure that periodic bank reconciliations are competed.
  • Ensure that required debt payments are made on a timely basis.
  • Maintain the chart of accounts, divisions, departments, and item lists.
  • Maintain an orderly accounting filing system.
  • Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory.
  • Assist with company insurance administration and claims when needed.
  • Assist with receivables administration and collection when needed.
Qualifications

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
  • 5+ years of progressively responsible experience for a private company
  • Certified public accountant or certified management accountant designations (preferred)
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including spreadsheets and databases
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and written, across all organization levels
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at one time and quickly transition between projects and priorities as required
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Maintain high level of confidentiality

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions including heat, humidity, cold and exposure to dust.
  • Must be able to walk, climb, stand, and sit for up to 10 or more hours a day.
  • Use of personal protective equipment is required.

Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
