Position Summary

The Controller is responsible for leading the accounting function for The Greenbrier and its affiliated entities. This position oversees the general ledger, financial reporting, month-end and year-end close processes, internal controls, and audit support while ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial records.

Working closely with the Vice President of Treasury and Finance leadership, the Controller provides strategic financial oversight, develops accounting staff, and partners with operational departments to support the resort's financial objectives.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Direct and oversee the month-end and year-end close processes to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Uniform System of Accounts for the Lodging Industry (USALI) standards.
  • Oversee the general ledger, chart of accounts, and account reconciliation processes across multiple entities.
  • Lead, develop, and evaluate the accounting management team, including the Assistant Controller, Accounts Payable Manager, Accounts Receivable Manager, and Payroll Manager.
  • Review and approve journal entries, accruals, prepaid expenses, depreciation, and inter company allocations.
  • Coordinate annual audits and lender or regulatory examinations while preparing required schedules and supporting documentation.
  • Oversee fixed asset accounting, capital project tracking, and construction-in-progress capitalization.
  • Manage payroll accounting, including payroll journal entries, accrued wages, and reconciliation of related liability accounts.
  • Oversee sales and use tax, occupancy tax, and other transaction tax filings in coordination with external tax advisors.
  • Partner with Treasury on bank reconciliations, daily cash reporting, and cash forecasting activities.
  • Collaborate with Financial Planning & Analysis on budget-to-actual reporting and forecast development.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen internal controls, improve accounting processes, and enhance operational efficiency.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
  • Five or more years of progressive accounting experience, including at least three years in a supervisory or Controller-level role.
  • Experience managing the full accounting cycle, including month-end close and financial statement preparation.
  • Multi-entity accounting experience, including inter company transactions and eliminations.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and internal control practices.
  • Experience serving as the primary contact during external audits.
  • Strong leadership, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Active CPA license.
  • Hospitality or resort accounting experience.
  • Knowledge of the Uniform System of Accounts for the Lodging Industry (USALI).
  • Experience with Sage 100 or comparable ERP systems.
  • Experience with Opera PMS, Simphony POS, or similar hospitality systems.
  • Experience within a privately held, closely held, or family-office ownership structure.
  • Experience leading process improvements or accounting system implementations.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Primarily office-based on resort property.
  • Extended periods of computer and keyboard use.
  • Additional hours may be required during month-end close, year-end reporting, audits, and peak business periods.
  • Occasional travel throughout the resort to collaborate with operational departments.
