Sphere Defense is a fully funded technology startup with the mission of providing allied countries with sovereign, effective and seamless autonomous countermeasures to neutralize todays’ and tomorrow’s aerial threats.
Sphere Defense was founded by industry veterans with previous successful exits, and is headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, in the heart of Europe.
About you
You are an experienced and highly-motivated Control Systems Engineer that has worked with complex production-grade flight control systems. Ideally, you’ve worked with flying robots.
What you’ll do
Be one of the first members of a high-performing team, designing and developing autonomous countermeasures to protect allied countries from aerial threats
Own, design, develop, document and test high-performant and reliable autonomous systems, with a focus on flight control
Architect, implement and tune control systems for high-speed, high maneuverability flying robot, including thrust-vectoring and control surfaces actuation
Build and maintain high-fidelity HIL and SIL simulation
Be hands-on, working close to the hardware when needed during development and tests
Draft and review documentation and design documents
Be a team player and a mentor, being available to support and grow the team when needed

Requirements
Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Control Systems, Aerospace engineering, or equivalent
Proficiency with Matlab and Simulink or equivalent for system modeling
Proficiency with one production language (C++) and one prototyping language (Python)
Demonstrated ownership of complex control system architectures in commercial systems
Deep understanding of classical and modern control methods, including RL-based techniques
Experience with ROS2 and Gazebo
Experience with tuning flight vehicle characteristics
Experience with PX4 flight controller or other flight controllers
Experience with sensor fusion (IMUs, radars, etc.)
Excellent interpersonal communication skills in written and spoken English; French or Dutch is a plus
You are a self-starter, able to work in a high-ambiguity environment and willing to take up new challenges
Preferred Qualifications
Proficient with Rust
Experience with VIO/SLAM integration
Passion for RC controlled drones (quadcopters, VTOLs)
First-hand experience with aerodynamics design and servo-actuators
