Isuzu Technical Center of America is seeking a Contract Engineer, OBD Development to join its operations in Plymouth, MI. The selected candidate will be placed with a preferred agency for employment.
JOB SUMMARY:
OBD Diagnostics & Engine Management Systems supports the development, implementation, validation, and maintenance of onboard diagnostics (OBD) strategies and engine management system calibrations for diesel powertrain applications. This role collaborates with cross-functional engineering teams to develop diagnostic calibrations, support regulatory compliance activities, perform testing and validation, and assist in the execution of diagnostic development plans.
The engineer will contribute to diagnostic strategy development, calibration integration, certification support, and issue resolution while ensuring compliance with applicable regulatory requirements and company standards.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Support execution of OBD diagnostic development plans and project deliverables.
Develop, validate, and troubleshoot diagnostic strategies and calibrations. Assist in the development and execution of OBD verification procedures. Track diagnostic development status and support project schedule adherence.

Develop and maintain diagnostic calibration data for assigned powertrain programs.
Support integration of new diagnostic software and calibration features.
Collaborate with calibration engineers, software developers, and product development teams to resolve diagnostic issues. Participate in technical reviews and working group meetings.

Support communication of diagnostic requirements, program timing, and technical issues within the product development team.
Assist with implementation of future model year diagnostic requirements.
Coordinate with internal stakeholders to ensure compliance with OBD regulations and vehicle requirements.

Participate in calibration comparison reviews and validation activities.
Maintain engineering records and project documentation.

Evaluate competitor vehicles and diagnostic systems for benchmarking purposes.
Research emerging technologies, industry trends, and regulatory developments.

Participate in technical discussions with suppliers and engineering partners.
Support issue resolution activities involving diagnostic hardware, software, and calibration systems.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
- Reports to: Powertrain Engineering Manager, OBD Development
- No direct reports
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & TRAINING:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or related engineering discipline. Masters Degree is preferred but not required.
- 3–7 years of experience in automotive or commercial vehicle engineering.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in OBD systems, engine controls, calibration, or powertrain development.
KNOWLEDGE:
- Latest government regulations and optimum strategies for OBD on light/heavy duty diesel engines
- Understanding of onboard diagnostic (OBD) systems and engine management systems.
- Familiarity with diesel engine controls, emissions systems, and diagnostic strategies.
- Knowledge of applicable OBD regulations and industry standards.
- Understanding of calibration development and validation processes.
- Familiarity with emissions and environmental testing methodologies including engine dyno testing.
SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Experience using calibration and measurement tools such as ETAS INCA or similar systems.
- Working knowledge of MATLAB/Simulink.
- Hands on experience with CAN communication and CAN data acquisition/analysis tools.
- Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to interpret technical requirements and engineering specifications.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional engineering teams.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and standard engineering software tools.
PHYSICAL STANDARDS:
Employee must be able to perform occasional light lifting (5-25 lbs).
Position requires 20–30% domestic and international travel, including overnight stays.
Requires full-time on-site work responsibilities.
