Job Description — Sr. Backend Engineer (P40) (Java, Hadoop)

Roles and Responsibilities

Adobe Pass is a well-established product suite serving the TV Everywhere industry, powering authentication and access experiences for major North American media and entertainment providers. We operate our systems at massive scale, supporting major live sports, business, and lifestyle events across millions of viewers.

We are now expanding our team with a Senior Backend Engineer who thrives in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment and is passionate about building scalable, secure, and high-performance systems. The ideal candidate has strong technical depth across frontend and backend technologies, a keen eye for system design, and a proven ability to mentor others while delivering high-quality, production-ready software in an agile setup.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop end-to-end web applications using modern frontend and backend technologies.

  • Architect and implement scalable RESTful APIs using Java, Spring Boot, and microservices

  • Lead design discussions and make architectural decisions that ensure scalability, reliability, and performance.

  • Drive observability, monitoring, and reliability through effective instrumentation and alerting practices.

  • Own the performance and resiliency of SLA-critical APIs, ensuring optimal response times and uptime.

  • Implement and enforce best practices for security, including authentication, authorization, and data protection at all layers.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams — including product managers, designers, and engineers — to deliver intuitive, high-impact solutions.

  • Contribute to shared frameworks, libraries, and engineering standards that enhance code quality and reusability.

  • Conduct code reviews, design reviews, and provide technical mentorship to junior engineers.

  • Continuously evaluate emerging technologies, tools, and frameworks to drive innovation and efficiency within the team.

What You Need to Succeed
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, with 8+ years of experience building and operating full-stack, production-grade web applications.

  • Strong fundamentals in computer science, data structures, algorithms, and large-scale system design

  • Deep expertise in Java, Spring Boot, RESTful web services, and microservices architecture

  • Deep expertise with cloud-native development and deployment (Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD).

  • Ensure high availability, scalability, and resilience of production systems, with a focus on observability and cost optimization.

  • Expertise in distributed systems - Hadoop, HBase, Spark, Apache Ignite, DynamoDB or other SQL/NoSQL databases — including schema design and query optimization.

  • Strong experience in observability and monitoring tools (Grafana, Prometheus, Elastic Stack, Splunk, New Relic, or Datadog).

  • Demonstrated success in performance tuning, capacity planning, and SLA adherence for mission-critical APIs.

  • In-depth knowledge of web security, including OAuth2, JWT, SAML, and secure coding practices.

  • Run and optimize Spark jobs to process and analyse large datasets that support application features or reporting.

  • Knowledge of load testing and performance benchmarking tools (JMeter, Gatling).

  • Experience with event-driven systems and message queues (Kafka, RabbitMQ).

  • Excellent problem-solving, debugging, and analytical skills.

  • Strong communication and collaboration abilities, with a track record of mentoring and technical leadership within teams.

Bonus Points

  • Experience in JavaScript, TypeScript, React, HTML, and CSS for creating responsive, modern UIs.

  • Experience with testing frameworks such as JUnit, Mockito, Jest, or Cypress

  • Exposure to DevSecOps practices and automated security scanning

  • Contributions to open-source projects or active engagement in developer communities.
