EQT is seeking a Compression Optimization Engineer to serve as the primary engineering resource for assigned compressor stations. This role is highly field-focused and works closely with operations and maintenance teams to diagnose equipment issues, improve reliability, and optimize the performance of natural gas compression assets.

The Compression Optimization Engineer will support reciprocating compressors and natural gas engines by troubleshooting mechanical and operational issues, supporting major maintenance events, and implementing reliability improvements that maximize throughput, efficiency, and equipment life.

The Compression Optimization Engineer I/II/III responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Serve as the primary engineering resource for assigned compressor stations, spending significant time in the field supporting operations and maintenance teams.
  • Diagnose and resolve compressor and engine performance issues including vibration, high temps, detonation, fuel inefficiency, pulsation, and mechanical failures.
  • Drive reliability improvements for reciprocating compressors and natural gas engines by identifying failure patterns and implementing corrective actions.
  • Provide onsite support during overhauls, top-end/bottom-end rebuilds, cylinder swaps, unit startups, and recommissioning activities.
  • Adjust operating parameters, evaluate load steps, analyze horsepower utilization, and optimize units for throughput and fuel efficiency.
  • Lead field-level investigations into mechanical and operational failures and develop practical, implementable solutions.
  • Partner with maintenance teams to improve PM intervals, component life cycles, and condition-based monitoring practices.
  • Assist with engine tuning, AFR adjustments, emissions troubleshooting, and compliance support.
  • Conduct routine site visits to assess equipment condition, operating practices, and safety compliance.
  • Work directly with Ariel, CAT, Waukesha, and other OEM reps during troubleshooting and major maintenance events.
  • Provides administrative support functions including monitoring priorities of current and anticipated workload and organizing and conducting assignments according to deadlines
  • Effectively navigates and adheres to team workflows to ensure smooth and consistent operations.
  • Understand priorities and deadlines as conveyed by Manager and effectively executes, with occasional supervision.
  • Leverages enterprise software systems to efficiently store, manage, and track critical information and documentation.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • 0–6+ years of direct experience supporting field compression assets in gathering or transmission systems.
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Deep working knowledge of reciprocating compressors (clearances, valves, rod loads, pulsation, capacity control) and large-bore gas engines.
  • Experience with CAT and/or Waukesha engines, including ignition timing, detonation management, and emissions control systems.
  • Experienced in Ariel Performance, eRCM, Gerp, Process simulation experience also a plus (Promax, Hysys)
  • Ability to interpret vibration data, oil analysis results, and performance trends to proactively address issues.
  • Working understanding of compressor control panels, PLC logic, and SCADA data — with the ability to connect data trends to mechanical realities in the field.
  • Comfortable working outdoors, in compressor buildings, and during major maintenance events — not just behind a desk.
  • Ability to make sound technical decisions in real-time operational situations.
  • Strong commitment to safe work practices and the ability to lead by example in field environments.
  • Willingness to travel to multiple compressor stations and respond to operational issues when needed.

Selected incumbent will be placed into the position that best suits their abilities and experience level.
