Are you passionate about helping communities shape their future through thoughtful comprehensive planning and meaningful public engagement? Stantec is seeking a remote Comprehensive Planning and Community Engagement Intern to support communities across northeast Kansas. In this role, you will contribute to community-driven plans that address land use, housing, transportation, economic development, infrastructure, natural resources, resilience, and quality of life while helping create inclusive opportunities for residents and stakeholders to participate in the planning process.

For communities across Northeast Kanas, our work recognizes the area’s distinctive landscapes, small towns, rural character, economic opportunities, infrastructure needs, and deep community connections. The intern will collaborate remotely with planners, designers, technical specialists, clients, and community partners while gaining hands-on experience in comprehensive planning and public engagement. Your Key Responsibilities 

  • Support comprehensive and long-range planning projects for communities across the region, helping move assignments from research and early engagement through plan development and final deliverables. 
  • Collect, organize, and analyze information related to land use, demographics, housing, transportation, economic development, infrastructure, natural resources, and community facilities. 
  • Assist with community outreach activities, including stakeholder interviews, focus groups, surveys, public meetings, workshops, open houses, and online engagement designed to reach a broad range of community voices. 
  • Prepare clear, accessible planning content, including meeting materials, summaries, maps, graphics, presentations, outreach materials, and draft plan sections. 
Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials 

  • Coursework or experience related to comprehensive planning, long-range planning, land use, rural or small-community planning, zoning, or community development. 
  • Strong research, writing, communication, and technical skills; experience with ArcGIS, data visualization, graphic design, survey tools, or the Adobe Creative Suite is beneficial. 
  • Interest in inclusive planning and an ability to communicate respectfully with residents, local leaders, community organizations, and other stakeholders. 
  • Strong time management, critical thinking, organization, and attention to detail, with the ability to manage assignments and meet deadlines in a remote setting. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a distributed team, communicate proactively, and complete tasks independently with appropriate guidance. 

Education and Experience 

  • Applicants should be current students of an accredited bachelor’s or master’s degree program in planning, community and regional planning, urban planning, geography, public administration, landscape architecture, or a related field. #Student

This is a remote position. The employee will work primarily from a home-office environment using computers and virtual collaboration tools. Periodic travel within the Northeast Kansas region will be required to support community meetings, workshops, stakeholder engagement, field visits, and other project needs. Travel may include evening meetings and occasional exposure to outdoor elements and inclement weather conditions.

About the Team
Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.

Benefits Summary: Regular full-time and part-time employees (working at least 20 hours per week) have access to medical, dental, and vision plans, a wellness program, health saving accounts, flexible spending accounts, 401(k) plan, employee stock purchase program, life and accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D) insurance, short-term/long-term disability plans, emergency travel benefits, tuition reimbursement, professional membership fee coverage and paid family leave. Regular full-time and part-time employees will receive ten paid holidays in each calendar year. In addition, employees will be eligible to accrue vacation between 10 and 20 days per year and eligible for paid sick leave (and if more generous, in accordance with state and local law).

Temporary/casual employees have access to 401(k) plans, employee stock purchase program, and paid leave, in accordance with state and local law.

Skills Required
