Job Title:Competitive Intelligence Consultant

Department:Arts and Sciences | Office of Industry Partnerships and Research Collaborations

The Competitive Intelligence Consultant plays a pivotal role in advancing the strategic goals of the college by uncovering and interpreting data-driven insights that align academic competencies with industry needs. This position requires a deep understanding of university data, bibliometric and patent information, and external market intelligence to identify opportunities for collaboration, commercialization, and strategic engagement.

The Competitive Intelligence Consultant is responsible for conducting comprehensive landscape and situational analyses to inform strategies for engaging with industry partners, investors, and potential licensees. By evaluating the college’s research strengths and comparing them with market trends and industry demands, the Consultant helps craft compelling value propositions that support research, business development and innovation partnerships.

A key aspect of the role involves identifying and profiling companies that present potential for strategic partnerships, including research collaborations and intellectual property licensing. The Consultant synthesizes information from a wide range of sources—such as annual reports, investor presentations, analyst briefings, product development pipelines, recruitment activities, patent filings, scholarly publications, and alumni employment data—to maintain a current and nuanced understanding of each target organization. This intelligence enables the college to proactively respond to changes that may impact existing or prospective relationships.

Additionally, the Competitive Intelligence Consultant tracks and reports on internal performance metrics, including commercialization outcomes, research expenditures, faculty outreach efforts, and other indicators of success. These insights are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the office’s initiatives and support continuous improvement in strategic engagement efforts.

Required: Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Six years of relevant experience required. Proven experience in data analysis, competitive intelligence, or strategic research, preferably in an academic or research-intensive environment. Strong analytical and communication skills with the ability to translate complex data into actionable insights. Familiarity with bibliometric tools, patent databases, and market intelligence platforms. Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with external stakeholders.

Desired: Master’s degree or equivalent experience. Ten years or more of relevant experience, preferably in an academic setting.
