POSITION SUMMARY: This position supports the work of the YMCA, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Competitive Gymnastics Team Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the competitive gymnastics program, ensuring a safe, positive, and developmentally appropriate environment for athletes and staff. This position provides leadership and support to coaching staff, maintains high standards for athlete development and program quality, fosters positive relationships with families, and promotes a culture of teamwork, sportsmanship, and excellence that aligns with the YMCA's mission and values.


EDUCATION AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Minimum of 18 years of age. High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's or bachelor's degree in a related field preferred. Minimum of 3–5 years of competitive gymnastics coaching experience required. Previous experience as a competitive gymnast strongly preferred. Prior experience supervising, mentoring, or leading coaching staff preferred. Strong knowledge of USA Gymnastics (USAG) rules, athlete development, and competitive program operations. CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications required or ability to obtain within the required timeframe.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Oversee the daily operation of the Competitive Gymnastics Team program in accordance with the YMCA's Mission Statement, policies, procedures, and USA Gymnastics (USAG) guidelines.
  • Plan, organize, and supervise team practices, ensuring athletes receive quality instruction through appropriate skill progressions and training plans.
  • Supervise, mentor, and support team coaches by providing guidance, feedback, and assistance with lesson planning, athlete development, and coaching techniques.
  • Monitor athlete progress and assist coaches in developing individual training goals and evaluations.
  • Ensure a safe training environment by enforcing YMCA safety standards, spotting athletes when necessary, and reporting safety concerns to the Gymnastics Director and/or Risk Management.
  • Assist in coordinating practice schedules, coaching assignments, and athlete group placements to maximize program efficiency.
  • Attend all scheduled team practices, coaches' meetings, required trainings, competitions, and other team events.
  • Oversee meet preparation, including coach assignments, athlete readiness, meet registrations (as assigned), and ensuring all coaches follow proper YMCA and USAG meet etiquette and Code of Conduct.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records, athlete assessments, incident reports, and staff timesheets, ensuring all documentation is completed on time.
  • Address athlete and parent concerns professionally and serve as a primary resource for team families, escalating concerns to the Gymnastics Director when appropriate.
  • Administer and document athlete discipline consistently with YMCA policies and the Competitive Team Code of Conduct.
  • Assist with team communications, seasonal planning, special events, fundraising initiatives, and scholarship activities.
  • Support the recruitment, onboarding, training, and evaluation of competitive team coaching staff.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and motivating team culture that promotes athlete development, sportsmanship, and the YMCA core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Gymnastics Director to support the success and growth of the Competitive Gymnastics program.
  • Adhere to Safety regulations and report and safety issues to Gymnastics Director and/ or Risk Management. 
Qualifications
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of competitive gymnastics, USAG rules, and safe coaching practices. 
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with staff, athletes, and families. 
  • Ability to supervise, mentor, and support coaching staff. 
  • Position requires evening, weekend, and occasional travel for competitions and events. 
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and successfully complete a criminal background check. 
  • Current CPR, First Aid and SafeSport certifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

Ability to oversee, support, and assist with a variety of gymnastics activities while ensuring a safe and positive environment for athletes and staff. Ability to sit, stand, walk, and move throughout the facility for extended periods of time; lift, bend, carry, reach, stoop, push, and pull and safely spot athletes. Noise levels in the work environment will vary depending on activity levels within the gymnastics and ninja center. Must possess the visual and auditory ability to monitor activities, respond to critical incidents, and act swiftly in an emergency while following the established emergency action plan.
