The Role
As a Compartment Manufacturing Engineer, you will represent Manufacturing within the Vehicle Systems Product Interface Team for a given global architecture or vehicle style. You will serve as the authoritative Manufacturing voice to Product Engineering and program teams, ensuring that designs meet Manufacturing Requirements and can be executed efficiently, safely, and within standard General Assembly processes. This role blends virtual assessments, manufacturability analysis, ergonomic evaluation, and cross-functional issue resolution to ensure GM's vehicles are designed for robust, repeatable, and high-quality assembly across global plants.
What You'll Do
- Analyze product designs with Product Engineering to ensure manufacturability, ergonomic feasibility, and compliance with Manufacturing Requirements.
- Communicate design changes, requirements, risks, and manufacturability concerns to Product Interface Leads and Program Execution Manufacturing Engineers.
- Enforce General Assembly strategies and validate program compliance; process deviations when required.
- Lead cross-functional issue resolution with Product Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and program stakeholders.
- Conduct virtual assessments including VR reviews, static/dynamic studies, process virtual builds, and ergonomic checks.
- Facilitate and support Level 2 PFMEA workshops for assigned compartments.
- Participate in ePeer reviews and Component Readiness Reviews (CRV).
- Document regional process/tooling requirements and ensure alignment across all assembly plants.
- Drive Base Engineered Content (BEC) reduction through complexity and labor minimization initiatives.
- Support IVER/PTB and Assembly Plant builds; serve as IRT co-chair to drive global issue resolution.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- 5+ years combined experience in Product Engineering (propulsion, chassis, suspension) and/or Manufacturing Engineering, including program launch or pre-production build support.
- Proficiency in manufacturability assessment, assembly feasibility, ergonomic evaluation, and system interface analysis (chassis, exterior, interior, powertrain).
- Experience with virtual build tools such as VIS Mockup, VR assessments, and digital manufacturing studies.
- Working knowledge of PFMEA development, process/tooling documentation, and review processes such as CRV and ePeer.
- Ability to interpret and apply Manufacturing Requirements across multiple vehicle systems in alignment with General Assembly processes.
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
- Strong communication skills and ability to convey technical findings across engineering and manufacturing.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate cross-functionally and manage multiple program deliverables.
- Experience in ME Execution, tooling development, or General Assembly plant operations.
- Familiarity with GM systems: MPS, VAA, ECR/EDGE, Auros, FIT, Momentum (GVDP), PRTS, LMS, and Teamcenter/VS workflows.
- Background in Exterior Trim, Interior Trim, Chassis, Powertrain, or electrical harness/component debugging.
- Training or certification in structured problem solving (Red X, DFSS, OpEx) or Industrial Engineering experience.
