Salary – up to £65,500 per year - plus 15% annual bonus and Private Healthcare plus excellent benefits package

A strong and resilient community energy sector is essential to achieving a just transition and meeting the devolved and UK Government’s Net Zero targets.

We are looking to recruit a dedicated resource in Scotland to focus on delivering our Community Energy Strategy that supports our communities’ energy ambitions in Scotland.

SP Energy Network’s Distribution business plan (RIIO-ED2), which runs from 2023 to 2028, sets out our vision for our expansive electricity network that can meet the challenge of Net Zero and lays out our commitments on how we will serve more than 3.5m homes and businesses across Scotland, England, and Wales. Our plans included a commitment to develop a small Community Energy Team who act as a central point of contact for community anchor organisations and communities looking to develop local energy schemes.

The dedicated team support communities with the relevant information as well as ensuring that they receive the right technical advice and optioneering options. They also signpost them to impartial, local support organisations, local energy planning activities and hand-hold local groups in need of additional support through our connections process.

The community energy team:

Prepare a Community Energy Strategy plan to clearly show how we will embed community energy thinking across our business and have this annually reviewed.

Our strategy is independently reviewed every year to make sure we are learning as we go and adjusting to changes in the external environment.

Build upon existing and further develop self-help tools, proactively raising awareness of them.

Work in partnership with local support organisations to deliver community energy awareness campaigns at scale and educational outreach activities to raise knowledge and awareness of the changes coming to the energy sector and how individuals and their communities can participate and benefit.

Create an annual Community Energy engagement plan, setting out who/how best to deliver information, and remain flexible and innovative in our approach.

What you will be doing

Managing, co-ordinating and delivering SP Energy Networks Community Energy Strategy - which needs to be updated annually, aligning this to our communities’ requirements and ensuring that it is independently reviewed to make sure we are learning as we go and adjusting to changes in the external environment.

Developing and continually reviewing stakeholder and customer mapping across SP Distribution

to ensure engagement activity is targeted and inclusive

Creating an annual Community Energy engagement plan, setting out who/how best to deliver information, and remain flexible and innovative in our approach.

Actively engaging across a broad and inclusive range of key stakeholders and local community groups with the purpose of understanding priorities and reflecting these in within our strategy and delivery plans

Working in partnership with local support organisations to deliver community energy awareness campaigns at scale and educational outreach activities to raise knowledge and awareness of the changes coming to the energy sector and how individuals and their communities can participate and benefit.

Developing appropriate stakeholder forums, meetings and special events that supports awareness of our Community Energy Strategy and its delivery.​

Build upon existing and further develop self-help tools, proactively raising awareness of them.

Responsible for ensuring that all Community Energy engagement activity is captured and actively recorded within agreed corporate systems​

Develop Licence and District stakeholder and customer engagement plans that support the delivery of financial, regulatory and business plan objectives and optimise return through incentive mechanisms (if applicable), integrating innovative solutions where appropriate

Supporting the development of customer service and stakeholder engagement skills, knowledge and behaviours across the Distribution Business.

Supporting the development of skills, knowledge and behaviours amongst the team through the mentoring and training of less experienced team members, graduates and trainees.

Work with other DNO’s, the regulator and other external parties to ensure a consistent approach across the UK for supporting Community that have energy ambitions.

Working in collaboration with the Central Stakeholder & Communications team, implement engagement strategies to ensure continual improvement in response to stakeholder and customer satisfaction research, analysis and feedback ​

Work with key internal stakeholders to ensure that communities are fully supported with any interactions with SP Energy Networks.

What you will bring

Expert knowledge of the regulatory environment including relevant output and incentive mechanisms.

Proven track record of effective stakeholder engagement and experience in devising and implementing engagement plans.  

Ability to communicate and present information effectively at all levels

Ability to manage competing priorities using sound engineering and financial judgement to determine optimal solutions

Awareness and understanding of key business drivers and the external commercial context in which SPEN is operating, particularly a good knowledge of the Community Energy Sector

Excellent IT and Writing skills

Strong skills in strategy development and implementation

Minimum Requirements 

  • Professional qualification or equivalent experience.

  • Excellent stakeholder engagement management skills demonstrated in previous role

  • Proven experience in a comparable managerial role

  • Computer literacy – e.g. Microsoft Office suite
