About Our Program
The Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury Communications Internship provides one undergraduate or graduate student with a Communications emphasis the opportunity to strengthen their skills through hands-on experience. The Communications Intern supports important internal and external communications initiatives for a highly regarded workplace committed to making government work better.
Throughout the program, the Communications Intern gains experience in writing, research, developing high-quality communications materials, supporting intranet and social media content, assisting with photography and video projects, and presenting Office events.
In addition to collaborating daily with the Comptroller’s Communications Team and engaging with Office leaders and staff, the Communications Intern joins a broader cohort of summer interns serving in other divisions across the Comptroller’s Office. The cohort participates in weekly check-ins to build connections and share progress and also comes together throughout the summer for professional development, networking, and engagement activities.
Location
The Communications Internship is located in Nashville, Tennessee. The internship requires a candidate who will report in-person to the office. Candidates should be available Monday through Friday. Depending on the assignment, interns may have the opportunity for limited travel with the Office. Typical travel is in the Nashville area; however, some opportunities may allow for travel to other parts of Tennessee.
Who We're Looking For
The ideal candidate will be a junior, senior, or graduate student working toward a bachelor’s degree (B.A.) or higher in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, English, or a related field. Knowledge of, and experience working in, a professional setting is a plus. It is also desirable for the candidate to have a connection to Tennessee.

Interns are paid $24 per hour via a third-party company. This position may require in-state day travel. Internship-related travel will be reimbursed.

- Project management experience
- Knowledge of media and public relations, either through coursework or employment experience
- Self-motivated and driven to speak up and share new ideas
- Comfortable interacting with and interviewing new people
- Ability to manage time effectively
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and internet research tools
- Experience with photography, video, graphic design, Canva, and Adobe Creative Cloud is a plus
Duties & Responsibilities:
Throughout the internship, duties and responsibilities may include:
- Researching, creating, updating, and posting online content, including Office news and updates, feature stories, employee and leadership profiles, infographics, and social media graphics
- Writing, proofreading, factchecking, and editing communications materials
- Interviewing and taking photos of COT Staff
- Publishing content using our content management system, Adobe Experience Manager
- Providing support during press conferences or for media releases
- Conducting research related to major projects, promotional campaigns, or events
- Contributing to the presentation of Office events
- Drafting video scripts
- Assisting in Office video production
- Participating in ad hoc projects and tasks as needed
