About O’Keefe Media Group 

O’Keefe Media Group is an independent media organization founded by investigative journalist James O’Keefe. OMG produces investigative reporting, undercover journalism, and original programming focused on matters of public interest, institutional accountability, and government and corporate misconduct. By combining the work of an experienced in-house media team with a nationwide network of citizen journalists, OMG seeks to equip Americans to document events, uncover facts, and bring important stories directly to the public. 

Position Overview 

O’Keefe Media Group is seeking a Communications Director to expand the reach of its reporting, strengthen its public reputation, and communicate its mission and impact to media, supporters, and donors. 

This position leads external communications, media relations, executive messaging, reputation management, and fundraising communications. The Communications Director will work across leadership, editorial, marketing, events, and donor development to turn OMG’s investigations, accomplishments, and funding priorities into compelling narratives. 

Success requires urgency, sound judgment, discretion, direct communication, and accountability in a fast-paced news environment. 

Areas of Accountability 

Communications Strategy and Messaging 

Objective: Execute an integrated communications strategy supporting OMG’s editorial, organizational, and fundraising priorities. 

Measures of Success 

  • Communications remain consistent with OMG’s mission and strategic priorities. 
  • Press materials, public statements, executive messaging, and donor communications are accurate and compelling. 
  • Campaigns and announcements are coordinated and delivered on schedule. 

Media Relations and Public Awareness 

Objective: Increase the visibility, reach, and credibility of OMG’s journalism and leadership. 

Measures of Success 

  • OMG secures valuable media coverage, interviews, and appearances. 
  • Investigations and announcements reach relevant audiences. 
  • Media relationships and public awareness strengthen over time. 

Donor and Fundraising Communications 

Objective: Support fundraising and donor engagement through persuasive, mission-aligned communications. 

Measures of Success 

  • Fundraising campaigns receive timely and effective communications support. 
  • Donor updates, impact reports, presentations, and stewardship materials strengthen engagement. 
  • Communications contribute to donor acquisition, retention, and fundraising results. 

Executive and Reputation Communications 

Objective: Prepare leadership for public engagement and protect OMG’s reputation. 

Measures of Success 

  • Leadership is prepared for interviews, donor meetings, appearances, and public events. 
  • Emerging risks are identified and escalated promptly. 
  • Crisis communications are timely, accurate, and coordinated. 

Cross-Functional Execution and Performance 

Objective: Ensure communications initiatives are organized, accountable, and continuously improving. 

Measures of Success 

  • Projects are completed accurately and on time. 
  • Departments remain aligned on communications priorities and schedules. 
  • Preventable last-minute requests and conflicting messages are eliminated. 
  • Performance data informs future communications strategy. 

Qualifications 

  • Five or more years of experience in communications, public relations, journalism, political communications, nonprofit communications, fundraising communications, or a related field. 
  • Exceptional writing, editing, presentation, and verbal communication skills. 
  • Experience developing messaging for organizations, executives, or public figures. 
  • Strong understanding of media relations, news cycles, rapid response, and reputation management. 
  • Ability to communicate organizational impact to public and donor audiences. 
  • Strong judgment, organization, discretion, and ability to manage competing deadlines. 
  • Willingness to work outside regular business hours when urgent communications needs arise. 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience in investigative journalism, independent media, advocacy, public affairs, nonprofit development, or donor relations. 
  • Experience creating fundraising campaigns, donor-impact reports, or major-donor materials. 
  • Established relationships with journalists, producers, podcast hosts, or media outlets. 
  • Experience supporting high-profile executives or managing crisis communications. 
  • Familiarity with media, audience, donor engagement, and fundraising metrics. 
  • Passion for investigative journalism, citizen journalism, and independent media. 

Skills Required

  • 5+ years of experience in communications, public relations, media relations, journalism, political communications, or a related field
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and verbal communication skills
  • Experience drafting communications for executives, public figures, or organizations
  • Strong understanding of media relations and news cycles
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and respond effectively under tight deadlines
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment when handling sensitive information
  • Experience working in journalism, media, advocacy, public affairs, political communications, or nonprofit communications
  • Existing relationships with journalists, producers, media outlets, and industry contacts
  • Experience supporting executive communications and public-facing leadership
  • Passion for investigative journalism and independent media
