Purpose of the role

To ensure that the commercial, innovation, technology, real estate, sponsorship, data licensing and service activities (CIT Areas) are conducted in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and to help the bank manage legal and reputational risks associated with these activities. 

Accountabilities

  • Development and implementation of best practice legal strategies for risk management and compliance.
  • Legal advice and support to the business on CIT Areas, including regulatory advice and advocacy, innovation and technology strategy, and contract drafting, review and negotiation.
  • Representation of the bank in legal proceedings related to CIT Areas, such as litigation, arbitration, and regulatory investigations.
  • Creation and review of legal documents including agreements and licenses for commercial services, technology, software, data, real estate, and sponsorship and other legal documents to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Legal research and analysis to stay up to date on changes in laws and regulations that may impact the bank across the CIT Areas.
  • Developing and delivering training programmes to educate employees on legal and regulatory requirements related to the CIT Areas.
  • Pro-active identification, communication, and provision of legal advice on applicable laws, rules and regulations (LRRs). Keeping up to date with regards to changes to LRRs in the relevant coverage area. Ensuring that LRRs are effectively allocated to, and adequately reflected within, the relevant policies, standards and controls.

They will identify new directions for assignments and/ or projects, identifying a combination of cross functional methodologies or practices to meet required outcomes.
  • Consult on complex issues; providing advice to People Leaders to support the resolution of escalated issues.
  • Identify ways to mitigate risk and developing new policies/procedures in support of the control and governance agenda.
  • Take ownership for managing risk and strengthening controls in relation to the work done.
  • Perform work that is closely related to that of other areas, which requires understanding of how areas coordinate and contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the organisation sub-function.
  • Collaborate with other areas of work, for business aligned support areas to keep up to speed with business activity and the business strategy.
  • Engage in complex analysis of data from multiple sources of information, internal and external sources such as procedures and practises (in other areas, teams, companies, etc).to solve problems creatively and effectively.
  • Communicate complex information. 'Complex' information could include sensitive information or information that is difficult to communicate because of its content or its audience.
  • Influence or convince stakeholders to achieve outcomes.

Join us as a Commercial and Technology Lawyer AVP at Barclays where you will be part of our Global Commercial, Innovation and Technology (CIT) Legal team which provides a range of legal services and advice across the Barclays Group at the cutting edge of law, innovation and regulation.

To be successful as a Commercial and Technology Lawyer AVP, you should have;

  • Dynamic and solutions-focused senior qualified lawyer (Solicitor, Barrister or similar in the UK or another comparable jurisdiction) with relevant post-qualification experience (in-house and/or private practice).

  • Experience advising on a range of commercial and technology agreements - supplier, client and partner facing – including, software licenses, hardware and software maintenance, SaaS and cloud services, sponsorship, professional services, data and index licensing and PoCs.

  • Experience advising on and managing legal risk arising in compliance with organisational policies and standards, including advising on ways to embed better risk management across the organisation.

  • The ability to work independently and manage your own workload, partnering with a variety of stakeholders, including Barclays’ Procurement and Technology teams and front-line business teams. 

  • Be a team player and work collaboratively with colleagues to contribute to the objectives of the CIT, the legal function and broader organisation.

Some other highly valued skills may include:

  • Have an understanding of legal rules and regulations impacting service provision at to a financial services institution, such as outsourcing, ring-fencing, the appointed representative regime, operational continuity in resolution, or other relevant experience with a financial services institution.

You may be assessed on the key critical skills relevant for success in role, such as risk and controls, change and transformation, business acumen strategic thinking and digital and technology, as well as job-specific technical skills.

This role can be based in Birmingham, Manchester or Glasgow.

Skills Required

  • Qualified lawyer (Solicitor, Barrister or equivalent) with post-qualification experience (in‑house and/or private practice).
  • Experience advising on commercial and technology agreements including software licenses, hardware/software maintenance, SaaS, cloud services, professional services, data and index licensing, sponsorship and PoCs.
  • Experience advising on and managing legal risk and compliance with organisational policies, standards and controls.

  • Experience developing and delivering training programmes or communicating complex legal and regulatory requirements to non‑legal stakeholders.
  • Understanding of financial‑services rules impacting service provision (outsourcing, ring‑fencing, appointed representative regime, operational continuity in resolution, etc.).
  • People leadership or ability to lead collaborative assignments and coach team members (where role has leadership responsibilities).
