Job Description
The Washington Post is looking for an ambitious and innovative reporter to cover the Washington Commanders. This position will bolster our coverage of the D.C. sports scene as the team is coming off an NFC championship game appearance and expected to be a Super Bowl contender for several years.
The ideal candidate will go beyond the game story with well-executed enterprise assignments that inform and delight readers while also working to engage and build our audience off-platform. We are looking for someone with sound news judgement who can build up sources and break news. Most of all, the right candidate should have deep curiosity and want to tell stories about the players and other characters that make up a team and all the tensions and intrigue that illuminate an NFL franchise.
Responsibilities:
Identifying and reporting stories that appeal to general interest readers as well as die-hard sports fans.
Producing content that stands out in a crowded sports landscape and can’t be found anywhere else.
Responding swiftly to breaking news with live coverage and sustained, strong reporting.
Reporting with the highest level of rigor and a commitment to fairness and accuracy.
Collaborating with colleagues on the Sports desk and across the newsroom, including the data and visual teams.
Traveling to away games and maintaining consistent coverage during the offseason.
Preferred qualifications:
At least five years of professional journalism experience.
Prior experience covering the NFL and sports is strongly preferred.
An eye for quirky, surprising stories.
Enthusiasm for new, conceptual approaches to storytelling.
A collaborative mindset and eagerness to experiment.
A high metabolism and competitive drive.
This position is based in our Washington, D.C., newsroom.
Interested applicants should submit a résumé and a cover letter outlining their qualifications and vision for the role, along with a résumé and three clips [as PDFs], to our jobs portal. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by July 2 will be prioritized. The cover letter should be addressed to Local Sports Editor Mark Selig, Sports Editor Jason Murray and Managing Editor Scott Vance.
The salary range for this position is: $97,400 — $162,300. The actual salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.
The Washington Post’s policy for employees is five days per week in the office, with exceptions for newsgathering and general business travel.
