Job Description

The Position

The Advanced Scientific Compute (ASC) team supports a growing ecosystem of HPC modules and scientific applications used by researchers across Our Company. This role provides dedicated engineering capacity to maintain, improve, and extend that ecosystem — reducing technical debt, optimizing scientific workflows, and responding quickly to researcher needs. The engineer will work closely with the US-based research community, with flexibility to collaborate across EU and US timezones, and will apply modern tooling including AI and GenAI to accelerate solution delivery.

What will you do?

  • Maintain and improve the ecosystem of HPC modules and scientific applications used by Our researchers , ensuring builds are reproducible and consistent across clusters.
  • Develop new software solutions in collaboration with researchers and HPC engineers — primarily Python — from build automation and internal tooling to researcher-facing applications, with full-stack capability where needed.
  • Identify and address technical debt across supported tools and workflows — duplicated builds, version sprawl, and inconsistency between environments.
  • Improve how researchers run scientific applications — cutting manual steps, shortening time to result, and making workflows behave predictably at scale.
  • Respond to technical issues and researcher requests, providing timely resolution and clear communication.
  • Apply AI and GenAI tooling to accelerate development, automate repetitive tasks, and improve researcher self-service.
  • Manage the lifecycle of supported software — versioning, deprecation, and retirement — in agreement with the research community, keeping the supported estate current and manageable.
  • Contribute to DevOps practices — CI/CD, version control, testing, and deployment pipelines for scientific software.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience Required

  • 3+ years of software engineering experience, with strong Python skills.
  • Experience maintaining and supporting software ecosystems — modules, libraries, or application portfolios — in a production or research environment.
  • Familiarity with HPC or scientific computing environments (job schedulers, cluster workflows, or equivalent).
  • DevOps fundamentals — version control (Git), CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and containerisation (Docker) — applied to building and packaging software, not only deploying it.
  • Ability to work flexibly across EU and US timezones to support researcher collaboration.
  • Strong communication skills — able to engage directly with non-technical research users and translate their needs into engineering solutions.

Nice to have

  • Full-stack development experience (web UI, REST APIs, or workflow tooling).
  • Hands-on experience with AI/GenAI tooling — AI-assisted development and agentic coding tools, prompt engineering, or LLM-based automation of repetitive engineering tasks.
  • Experience with Python packaging and environment management (Conda/mamba, pip, virtual environments) alongside the scientific Python stack (NumPy, SciPy, Pandas, Jupyter).
  • Experience in pharma, biotech, or academic scientific computing environments.

What we offer

  • Exciting work in a great team, global projects, international environment.
  • Opportunity to learn and grow professionally within the company globally.
  • Hybrid working model, flexible role pattern (e.g., even 80% full-time is possible in justified cases).
  • Pension and health insurance contributions.
  • Internal reward system plus referral programme.
  • 5 weeks annual leave, 5 sick days, 15 days of certified sick leave paid above statutory requirements annually, 40 paid hours annually for volunteering activities, 12 weeks of parental contribution.
  • Cafeteria for tax free benefits according to your choice (meal vouchers, sport, culture, health, travel, etc.), Multisport Card.
  • Vodafone, Raiffeisen Bank and Foodora discount programmes.
  • Up-to-date laptop and iPhone.
  • Parking in the garage, showers, refreshments, massage chairs, library, music corner.
  • Competitive salary, incentive pay, and many more.
