Chorus Assistant, Lower School & Upper School
Start Date: Rolling hiring – accepting applications on an ongoing basis
Reports To: Music Department
Pay Rate: $70.00 per hour
Schedule:
- Part-time, hourly position
- Three weekly rehearsals of 45 minutes each, plus set-up time before each rehearsal
- Additional hours during the dress rehearsal and performance period in January

About the Position
The Chorus Assistant supports the School for Children’s Lower School and Upper School chorus programs, working alongside the music teaching team across three weekly rehearsals and a January performance season. The Assistant prepares and studies all musical materials in advance, and is expected to lead, demonstrate, and conduct vocal parts for assigned groups. This role is well suited to a skilled musician with choral experience who enjoys working with elementary and middle school singers and who can help sustain a focused, encouraging rehearsal environment.
Key Responsibilities
Musical Preparation and Instruction
- Prepare and study all materials prior to rehearsals, including learning both vocal and accompaniment parts
- Lead, demonstrate, and conduct vocal parts for assigned chorus groups
- Rehearse with soloists as applicable
Rehearsal Support
- Set up the display and audio systems and prepare the piano 5–10 minutes before the start of each rehearsal
- Work closely with the teaching team to support students’ performance and behavior throughout rehearsals
- Attend all weekly rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and performances
Rehearsal and Performance Schedule (2026 - 2027)
Weekly Rehearsals (45 minutes each)
- 8/9s Chorus — Wednesdays at 9:45 AM
- 10/11s Chorus — Wednesdays at 11:15 AM
- 12/13s Chorus — Thursdays at 11:15 AM
Dress Rehearsals and Performances
- Performance season runs January 12 – January 27, 2027
- Each chorus is assigned its own dress rehearsal and performance dates within that window
- Dress rehearsals are typically scheduled the day before the corresponding performance
- Each performance date includes a 1:30 PM show and a 6:30 PM show
Qualifications
Required
- Strong music literacy, including the ability to read and learn vocal and accompaniment parts independently
- Ability to lead, demonstrate, and conduct vocal parts with elementary and middle school singers
- Availability for all scheduled weekly rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and performances, including evening shows
- Willingness to collaborate as part of a teaching team
Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in music, music education, or a related field
- Choral directing, conducting, or accompanying experience
- Piano proficiency
- Experience working with children in an educational or performance setting
- Familiarity with Bank Street’s progressive, child-centered approach to education
