We continue to evolve the engine that makes our mission possible, and we are looking for a senior strategic partner to serve as the Chief of Staff & Head of Operations and Administration for the Ophthalmology Squad and Network for our US Commercial, Medical, and Government Affairs (CMG) organization. This is not just an operations leadership role; it is a critical leadership opportunity to shape a highly volatile, fiercely competitive therapeutic area during a period of unprecedented growth
The Opportunity
As the Chief of Staff & Head of Operations and Administration, you will serve as a high impact internal management consultant, trusted advisor, and "capacity multiplier" for the Ophthalmology Squad Leader, Squad, and Network. You will navigate a profound clinical, macroeconomic, and operational evolution in the retinal disease landscape, standing at the forefront of the fight against vision loss.
You will lead the the operational center of the therapeutic area—seamlessly blending three distinct strategic, operational, and delivery pillars: serving as the Head of Operations; managing a dedicated team of administrative professionals and Operations Managers; and acting as the primary conduit for cross-functional communications and strategy across the Ophthalmology ecosystem.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Partnership & Advisory: Serve as a confidential thought partner and high-level proxy for the VP by synthesizing complex cross-functional insights (Legal, Medical, Marketing, etc.) to drive decision-making, while acting as a trusted sounding board empowered to challenge leadership and ensure strategic alignment across the network.
Operational Excellence & Squad Health: Manage the design and delivery of the Ophthalmology Therapeutic Area Operating Rhythm (goals, objectives, KPIs, budgets and operational expense and resource management) with cross-functional stakeholders, orchestrate the operational deployment of complex, large-scale initiatives within the Ophthalmology business, while maintaining accountability for the overall health of the Squad and Network.
Cross-Functional Leadership & Narrative Stewardship: Lead the narrative for the VP by drafting core strategic communications that inspire stakeholders, while navigating the matrixed organization through complex change and fostering a connected, humanized culture that prioritizes meaningful collaboration over transactional tasks.
Team Leadership & Talent Development: Lead and develop a high-performing team of three while collaborating across the CPO leadership team to strategically deploy talent and resources in alignment with the evolving needs of a multi-billion-dollar portfolio.
Business & Financial Acumen: Facilitate critical discussions around ROI, P&L, and resource trade-offs to drive data-driven investment decisions, while representing squad priorities with senior leadership to influence outcomes through strong executive presence.
Who You Are:
10+ years experience in operations, communications, or marketing within the pharmaceutical or biotech industry with a bachelor's degree in a relevant field of study
Demonstrated operational discipline and strategic field/ customer insight with extensive project management expertise, including leading complex, cross-functional initiatives in a global matrix environment
Proven ability to apply sophisticated management consulting frameworks to solve complex biopharmaceutical and operational challenges
Proven experience as a strategic thought partner to senior leaders, with a track record of driving change in complex environments
Commitment to compliance with all corporate policies and guidelines
Location
This role is located in South San Francisco and offers a hybrid schedule working 3 days per week on campus
No relocation benefits are available for this posting
The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location in California is $166,500 - $309,100. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
