Description

The Chief Financial Officer will work directly with the Treasurer, Board of Directors/Directorate and reports directly to the International President/CEO with a dotted line reporting relationship to the Executive  Director. The Chief Financial Officer is accountable for the overall leadership, management, and day-to-day operations of the finance office. 

This includes providing financial and administrative support to the Directorate, corporate staff and members of the organization and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures. In addition, the Chief Financial Officer will be focused on performance outcomes, excellent problem solving and will be a strong communicator. Maintaining the ongoing financial health and integrity of the organization is a must.

She/He will assist with leading the corporate finance team on a day-to-day basis linking the organization’s strategies and developing finance initiatives to drive business strategies to the work performed daily to deliver measurable results. The Chief Financial Officer has overall responsibility for the organization’s finance staff, including talent selection, development, assessment, and reward strategies. Effective delegation, results orientation and employee coaching are key leadership traits expected. 

The Chief Financial Officer will interact with external partners and vendors to source quotes and negotiate in the best interest Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Management

  • Collaborates with the Executive Director and the International Finance Committee to prepare a comprehensive budget and secure adequate funding for the operations of the organization.
  • Ensures development and maintenance of all financial records of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in a manner that is consistent with generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Provides the President/CEO, Executive Director, and the Board of Directors/Directorate with reliable and timely information on the fiscal conditions of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., to include monthly financial reports.
  • Apprises the Treasurer of the organization’s fund balances and expenditures. Provides budget data to the Finance Committee.
  • Ensures sufficient internal cash controls are in place and enforced.
  • Receives and accounts for all funds; makes financial statements available for each meeting of the Board of Directors/Directorate and Finance committee. 
  • Ensures that the organization complies with all legislation covering taxation and withholding payments.
  • Serves as finance manager of all annual conferences and International Founder’s Day and works with the hostess chapters and all other appropriate persons to assure the management of the financial resources for successful delivery with appropriate conference managers.
  • Keeps abreast of policy and procedures effecting Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated and regularly notifies appropriate parties, President/CEO, International Finance Committee and Board of Directors/Directorate of changes.
  • Works with staff to implement all aspects of the International Programs as directed by the President/CEO.
  • Monitors the annual budget and manages operations to meet the approved budget.
  • Functions as the custodian with the Executive Director of all the permanent financial records of the organization.
  • Administers the funds of the organization according to the approved budget and monitor the monthly cash flow of the organization.
  • Prepares the financial statements with approval of the Directorate to the membership on a yearly basis and to the Boule.
  • Receives and reviews contracts and recommends approval in liaison with the Executive Director and legal authority.
  • Participates in fund raising events when deemed appropriate.

Leadership and Management Responsibilities:

  • Establishes a performance and results oriented culture through the clear communication and cascade of goals and objectives for staff members and aligned with the strategy set by the President/CEO, Executive Director and Directorate.
  • Evaluates and develops skills within the finance organization.
  • Determines staffing requirements with the Director of Human Resources Director for organizational management and program delivery.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Human Resources to implement human resources policies, procedures, and practices relative to managing the finance team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance or economics, accounting, business or business administration, mathematics or equivalent combination of education and experience required; Preferred: CPA, MBA; MPA, Law, or master’s in finance with business experience or other related professional fields.
  • 8+ years of progressive management and/or leadership experience in positions involving financial management, contract negotiations, document and proposal writing, and long-range planning.
  • Experience using MIP fund accounting software. 
  • May be an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Must be in good standing.
  • Thorough knowledge of the sorority’s structure and its governing documents with attendance at regional conferences and/or international meetings within the last 5 years if a member.
  • Strong leader who can act as a change agent.
  • Champion for the organization.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations in a tactful and diplomatic manner.
  • Flexible work hours including weekends. (Regional and Boule Conferences).
  • Travel extensively throughout the year (approximately 35%).
