This role requires two days per week in our Kilkenny HQ.

As Head of Software Development , you will help to lead the development organisation, playing a pivotal role in shaping the company's technological direction and ensuring the successful delivery of innovative products. You will be responsible for driving the execution of new features, overseeing platform enhancements, and maintaining the stability and quality of our SaaS platform. You will also introduce forward-thinking development methodologies to enhance both speed and quality in alignment with the company’s evolving business goals.

This is a leadership role that demands significant hands-on technical expertise and prior experience in leading teams. It is well-suited for professionals aiming to advance from roles such as Principal Software Engineer or Engineering Director into a more senior leadership position.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Strategic Leadership
    • Define and execute a clear vision for the engineering team, ensuring alignment with the product roadmap and business objectives.
    • Oversee all aspects of software engineering, including development methodology, project planning, architectural decisions, risk management, and successful delivery against the technical roadmap.
    • Manage the strategic allocation of resources, ensuring scalability, quality, and efficiency in development and release cycles, with a focus on automated quality assurance.
  2. Team Leadership & Development
    • Lead, inspire, and mentor a high-performing, cross-functional engineering team committed to excellence, innovation, and collaboration.
    • Guide recruitment, staffing, and professional development efforts to build a world-class engineering team.
    • Foster continuous improvement in engineering practices, processes, and tools to enhance team performance and product quality.
  3. Technology Strategy & Innovation
    • Stay ahead of emerging technologies and industry best practices to drive innovation across the engineering function.
    • Evaluate, adopt, and integrate new technologies to enhance engineering processes and optimize the SaaS platform.
  4. Program & Project Management
    • Manage a diverse portfolio of development projects, ensuring alignment with business needs and technical roadmaps.
    • Collaborate closely with Product and Quality Assurance teams to prioritize and deliver high-quality features and functionality.
    • Champion the use of Agile, DevOps, and DevSecOps methodologies to ensure efficient, secure, and scalable software delivery.
  5. Development & Support
    • Lead the engineering team in the development of automation solutions, continuous systems analysis, and software enhancements.
    • Drive collaboration between engineering, product, and QA teams to ensure high performance, stability, and scalability of the platform.
    • Leverage a deep understanding of business needs to proactively address service delivery challenges and identify opportunities for improvement.
Requirements
    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
    • Minimum of 15+ years of experience in software engineering, including at least 5+ years in a leadership role.
    • Strong expertise in both frontend and backend development, with experience in full-stack architecture (e.g., C#, PHP, Angular).
    • Proven success in building and maintaining scalable web applications, ideally on AWS.
    • Experience with multi-tenant SaaS platforms and microservices architectures.
    • Proficiency with container technologies (Docker) and messaging frameworks (e.g., SQS, Kafka).
    • Expertise in API development, systems integration, and Agile, DevOps, and DevSecOps methodologies.
    • Experience in SaaS and/or Fintech environments is a plus.
    • Experience managing third-party supplier contracts and relationships.
    • Willingness to travel for industry events and client/partner meetings.

    • Proven ability to balance technical innovation with business needs, delivering solutions on time and within budget.
    • Experience managing geographically distributed teams across multiple time zones.
    • Strong problem-solving skills, with a focus on delivering high-quality software solutions in a dynamic environment.
    • Ability to set and track key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to measure engineering team success.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
    • Experience in leading global engineering teams.
    • Familiarity with core security principles and practices.
    • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing.
    • Frontend/UI development experience is advantageous.
    • Hands-on experience with containerized technologies and microservices (AWS preferred).
