This is an exciting opportunity to work directly with our community and have a significant impact on the experience of our Lessans Camp JCC participants. The Jewish Content Coordinator brings ruach (spirit!), meaning, and joyful Jewish learning to every part of camp life! This role is all about helping campers and staff experience Jewish values, traditions, and stories through creative activities, songs, art projects, Shabbat celebrations, and the fun, spontaneous moments that make camp so special.

This is a part time position (25-30 hours a week).

The Bender Jewish Community Center in Rockville, Maryland is a premier community center at the heart of Jewish life in Montgomery County, operating a full-scale health and fitness center, pre-school, day camp and variety of education and arts programs.

Core Responsibilities include:

Jewish Content Leadership

  • Help campers and staff explore what being Jewish means to them in creative, meaningful, and age-appropriate ways, regardless of their background.
  • Create activities that connect Jewish values to everyday camp life through song, story, friendship, and play.
  • Coordinate with camp specialists and shaliach to implement Jewish content (Hebrew language, Jewish values, etc.) within their programming curriculum.
  • Collaborate with camp leadership for staff engagement and camp wide events (Friday Special Events, Shabbat, Orientation week, staff meetings, etc.
  • Act as a resource for staff and campers.
  • Assist in implementation of camp wide mitzvah projects.

Camper Care and Engagement

  • Supervise and engage with all participants (ages 4-21) in programs and activities while under the position’s care.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of campers served, interact appropriately with campers in a variety of situations, appropriately model behavior, enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control and use positive behavior-management techniques.
  • Work with the Adaptive Recreation Coordinator to ensure activities are accessible.

Preparation, Planning, and Organization

  • Work directly with specialists/leadership team to plan activities.
  • Submit written activity plans to the Associate Camp Director.
  • Coordinate materials and supplies with the Associate Camp Director.
  • Meet with Associate Camp Director weekly.
Qualifications

Qualifications include:

  • Strong knowledge of Jewish culture, values, and traditions.
  • Strong background in Jewish education.
  • Experience in camp, youth group or Jewish programming.
  • Relevant higher education preferred
  • Ability to get on the floor to participate and supervise activities.
  • Ability to move equipment and supplies as required.
  • Prior experience working with school aged children with all abilities.
  • Ability to engage with campers and staff of all ages.
  • Ability to adapt all planned activities to include children with disabilities
  • Ability to engage with participants of all ages, campers and staff
  • Ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards within the camp program.
  • Strong written and spoken language skills.
  • Ability to get to and from work each day.
  • Be accepting of, and sensitive to the diverse racial, national, sexual orientation, gender identity, abilities, religious and cultural backgrounds of everyone at Lessans Camp JCC.
  • Willingness to be flexible and adapt to changes in schedule, responsibilities, and Lessans Camp JCC activities as needed.

Priority will be given to candidates who are available the entire camp season starting on June 15 going through August 7.


Additional Information

The pay range for this position is $4,100 - $5,000 (total pay for the regular camp season), dependent on hours worked. Current educators, relevant degree, and advanced certification bonuses available.
