Job Description
The Legal Counsel is a strategic role providing legal oversight, guidance and counseling to the management team of Brazil and above-market activities as needed. This is a leadership role with high exposure on a country and regional/global level. It is also an operational role as a legal advisor and business partner to the affiliate team, requiring a hands-on approach and “business partner” mentality. This position shall support the mission of driving a robust corporate culture that embraces integrity in our operations, consistent with the core values and principles of Biogen Code of Conduct.
The Legal Counsel will report to the Chief Commercial & International Counsel. This role will be the legal advisor and business partner to all core local business franchises (MS, SMA, new products) and functions.
The Legal Counsel will be responsible, but not only to:
- To be an active member of the Brazil Leadership Team and serve as a trusted advisor, bringing good judgment and offering practical legal solutions to challenges facing the affiliate.
- Support the affiliate’s business operations / internal departments on legal matters, with effective written and verbal communication. Provide legal support for commercial contract negotiations
- As directed, conduct internal investigations and maintain confidentiality of information.
- Work with Commercial, Market Access, Medical and Sales departments to provide strategic and effective legal support for launching new products and in supporting marketed products initiatives
- Support above market activities as needed by providing legal advice during above-market assessments
- Effectively select and manage relationship and expenses with external counsels.
- Oversee contract negotiations, drafting, and review for all Brazil operations.
- Ensure compliance with local and international laws, regulations, and company policies across the region
- Collaborate with global legal teams to ensure consistency in legal approaches and best practices
- Represent the company in legal matters with government agencies, business partners, and other external stakeholders.
Qualifications
- Law degree (J.D. or equivalent) required, with bar admission
- Master's degree in International Law or Business Administration (MBA) preferred
- Minimum 10 years of experience in corporate law.
- Advanced knowledge of Brazil legal systems, regulations, and business practices
- Expertise in cross-border transactions and international trade laws
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Portuguese
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills
- Proficiency in legal research and analysis
- Demonstrated expertise in contract negotiation and drafting
- Ability to manage complex legal projects and multiple priorities simultaneously
- Strong business acumen and ability to align legal strategies with organizational goals
