The role – what you’ll do
Barr is seeking a senior blasting engineer to join our innovative and collaborative team. In this role, you will play a crucial role in supporting clients’ projects and this growing practice at Barr. Services will include consulting with clients and supporting projects in construction, quarrying, and mining related to rock excavation, blast design, vibration analysis, rock fragmentation analysis, and technical troubleshooting. Work will also include project management, mine planning, reporting and documentation, and training. This role also involves mentoring and leading other team members while interfacing with clients and multidisciplinary teams.
Your impact – key responsibilities
Project leadership: oversee engineering investigation and design support tasks from the conceptual phase through design with an emphasis on advanced analyses, testing, and numerical modeling. Serve as the technical lead and point of contact for clients and internal team members. Develop project scopes, schedules, and budgets.
Field work: oversee field investigations and perform site visits, including at construction, quarrying, and mine sites.
Technical analysis: oversee and review the preparation of plans and specifications, reports, and cost estimates.
Reporting and documentation: prepare daily communications, develop technical reports, write proposals, and develop design recommendations.
Team and client engagement: serve as a mentor and leader for other team members. Support business development and proposal writing.
About the opportunity
Work location: A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position can be based out of Barr's Duluth, Minneapolis, or Hibbing, Minnesota; Bismarck, North Dakota; Salt Lake City, Utah; or Reno, Nevada, offices.
Travel expectation: up to 40 percent domestic fieldwork, with an average of two days of continuous job site presence.
Work environment: ability to work in locations that feature rough terrain typical of construction sites with limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

About you – required core competencies
Education: bachelor’s degree in geotechnical engineering, mining engineering, geological engineering, or civil engineering with blasting or geotechnical emphasis. Graduate degree in geotechnical engineering; master's degree is preferred. Professional Engineer (PE) license or the ability to obtain one is preferred.
Experience: 10+ years of related experience.
Willingness and ability to regularly travel.
Technical skills: experience with blast planning, design, implementation, and evaluation; vibration measurement and analysis; specification design; experience with surface and underwater blasting; drill and blast project management; technical trouble shooting; mine planning; blast plans; blast permit process; training; and investigations.
Driver’s license: possession of a current, valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.
Compensation: Anticipated range of $100,000–$160,000 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as exempt (salaried) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
