About DeNova

DeNova is a Canadian biotechnology company developing sustainable food solutions through microbial fermentation. DeNova operates a research and development pilot facility in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, equipped for fermentation and downstream bioprocess development, analytical chemistry, and microbiology research. With its first commercial facility now under construction, DeNova is entering an exciting phase of growth – expanding its scientific, operational, and commercial capabilities to bring its first product, Psomi™, to market and contribute to the evolution of modern protein production.

The Opportunity

DeNova is seeking a Bioprocess Scientist to support research and development activities focused on optimizing and scaling its microbial fermentation platform. This role is ideal for a scientifically driven individual who enjoys hands-on experimental work and wants to contribute directly to improving process performance and advancing DeNova’s microbial protein technology toward commercial readiness.

The Bioprocess Scientist will work primarily in DeNova’s laboratory environment, executing bench- scale experiments and supporting process development initiatives that improve fermentation and downstream processing

performance and scalability. Working closely with a team of scientists, engineers, and technicians, this role plays a key part in generating reliable data, improving process performance and consistency, and translating experimental results into actionable process insights. This position is well suited to a detail-oriented, solution-focused team player who thrives in a collaborative R&D setting.

Core Responsibilities

  • Experimental Execution: Design and execute bench- and small pilot-scale fermentation and downstream experiments, including setup, monitoring, sampling, troubleshooting, and data collection.
  • Process Development & Optimization: Support the optimization of microbial fermentation and downstream processes through systematic experimentation and data-driven analysis, contributing to improved performance, robustness, scalability and cost-efficiency.
  • Scale-Up & Pilot Support: Contribute to the transition of optimized processes from bench scale toward pilot-scale and commercial operation, working closely with engineering and pilot plant teams.
  • Data Analysis & Communication: Analyze and interpret experimental data, maintain clear experimental records, and communicate findings and recommendations to internal stakeholders.
  • Laboratory Operations & Safety: Support day-to-day laboratory operations, including media preparation and equipment upkeep, while maintaining high standards of safety, documentation, and compliance.
  • Collaboration & Team Contribution: Work collaboratively with scientists, engineers, and technicians to support shared research goals and contribute to a positive, high-performing R&D culture.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of three years hands-on experience working with bench- and/or pilot-scale bioprocess systems with practical experience with microbial fermentation, downstream processing, aseptic techniques, and laboratory operations.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and executing fermentation and downstream  experiments.
  • Strong technical problem-solving skills and a commitment to continuous learning.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Clear, professional written and verbal communication skills.
  • A collaborative, team-oriented mindset with a proactive, solution-driven approach.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and lift >25lbs.

Work Location & Schedule

This role is based at DeNova’s research facility in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and requires regular onsite work. Due to the nature of biological experiments and continuous fermentation processes, this role may occasionally require onsite work during evenings and/or weekends.

Why DeNova?

  • Join a purpose-driven biotech company advancing sustainable food production through microbial fermentation
  • Apply your expertise in a collaborative, fast-paced environment to address real-world challenges.
  • Significant growth and development opportunities as the company scales and prepares for commercial launch to market.
  • Competitive salary and benefits, with a team culture that values excellence, care, and whole person well-being.
