The Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Janelia Research Campus is a pioneering research center in Ashburn, Virginia, where scientists pursue fundamental questions in the life sciences. Our integrated teams of biologists, computational scientists, and tool-builders innovate research practices and technologies to solve biology’s deepest mysteries. HHMI launched Janelia in 2006, establishing an intellectually enriching environment for scientists to do creative, collaborative, hands-on work. We share our methods, results, and tools with the scientific community.

Summary:

Integrative Imaging exists to coordinate Janelia resources and expertise into a seamless workflow that works for microscopy projects. An important component of this ecosystem is the Advanced Imaging Center (AIC), which makes Janelia's imaging technologies and expertise accessible to the world at no cost. Our interdisciplinary team collaborates with and integrates the resources of support teams at Janelia including cell culture, animal facilities, hardware development, and scientific computing to enable researchers’ use of the unique and powerful microscopy tools developed here at Janelia.

More importantly, Integrative Imaging scientists create highly integrated collaborations to design and implement complex microscopy projects. The team co-innovates with Janelia scientists to (1) provide technical consultations and experimental design, (2) develop novel sample preparations and labeling methodologies, (3) implement novel imaging workflows, and (4) offer in-depth image processing and analysis capabilities and guidance.

About the role:

The Integrative Imaging BioImage Data Analyst will work with Janelia scientists and external users at all stages of their microscopy experiments and will be a primary source of bioimage analysis expertise. This expertise will be shared through end-to-end project management, including development of quantitative experimental designs; implementation of custom analysis and visualization tools; and interactions with the Integrative Imaging team, Janelia community, and external users. This is an excellent role for a problem solver with an empathetic, collaborative mentality who enjoys partnering with interdisciplinary scientists.

What we provide:

  • A competitive compensation package, with comprehensive health and welfare benefits.

  • Interdependent, team-wide support in daily operations.

  • Access to extraordinary researchers, resources, and impactful science as part of your career development.

  • Janelia Research Campus is committed to a healthy work-life balance, and offers many amenities, including on-site childcare, free gym, on-campus housing, plentiful social and dining spaces, and shuttle-bus service.

What you’ll do:

  • Co-develop the central objectives and experimental requirements of researchers’ microscopy needs.

  • Think creatively.

  • Develop detailed experimental plans and milestones for effective project management.

  • Stay updated with the latest microscopy-related research & development at Janelia and elsewhere.

  • Use existing image processing and analysis tools to create custom processing workflows to address the image analysis and visualization needs of each project.

  • Interpret images and scientific results to propose subsequent experiments and procedures. This will involve a combination of software analysis tools, in collaboration with the Janelia Scientific Computing team and other data scientists as well as biologists.

What you bring:

  • M.S., or Ph.D. in Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field, or equivalent in education and experience.

  • Minimum two years of experience working with microscopy-based bioimages.

  • Ability to manage progress on multiple projects concurrently and thrive in a highly collaborative research ecosystem.

  • Experience translating biological hypotheses and questions into quantitative approaches.

  • Basic understanding of how optical imaging devices impact image quality/content and how biological experiments are performed is preferred.

  • Experience with common image processing and analysis techniques such as image filtering, segmentation, feature recognition, pattern matching, deconvolution.  Familiarity with artificial intelligence approaches will be ideal.

  • Expertise in development of image processing and analysis workflows using FIJI, Python, Julia, MATLAB, or other platforms.

  • Ability to effectively communicate both remotely and in-person (written and verbal), conveying expertise in experimental design, data analysis, and interpretation to all stakeholders.

Please include a cover letter with your application detailing your qualifications and experience.
