About Base

Base is building the foundation of American power. The grid is the largest, most complex machine in the world. Yet it’s aging, struggling to keep up with today’s demand, and is unprepared for our electrified future.

Base is modernizing the grid as the first engineering-led, technology-driven power company. We’re deploying a nationwide network of distributed batteries that strengthens critical infrastructure and saves Americans money.

Our team of engineers, operators, creatives, technicians, and electricians design and deploy systems at speed. If you want to tackle the problem that will define this century and shape the future of American energy, now is the time. Join us.

About the Role

As our Battery and Inverter Compliance Engineer, you will be instrumental in guiding Base through the complex regulatory landscape to achieve full certification and launch of our new battery and inverter. This is a critical, high-ownership role for someone with deep technical knowledge of regulatory standards and a strong drive to influence and navigate the compliance ecosystem.

You’ll work cross-functionally with hardware, firmware, and systems engineering teams, owning our relationships with testing labs and standards bodies and ensuring that every design decision maps to a compliant product path. You’ll be both a strategic advisor and a hands-on contributor—defining requirements, reviewing designs, managing certification test plans, and helping shape Base’s product compliance strategy for years to come.

What You'll Do

  • Own and lead Base’s relationships with standards bodies, utilities, and Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTLs), including UL and ETL.

  • Define and communicate certification and compliance requirements to cross-functional engineering teams early in the design cycle.

  • Interpret, clarify, and challenge implementation of relevant standards (e.g., UL 1741, UL 9540, UL 1973, UL 9540A, IEEE 1547) and ensure accurate application.

  • Track regulatory changes and emerging standards that may impact Base’s product roadmap; advocate for Base’s interests in working groups and standards meetings.

  • Review and approve hardware and system designs for regulatory compliance.

  • Document compliance-related processes, findings, and gaps to ensure audit readiness and knowledge transfer.

  • Partner with firmware and controls teams to ensure software behavior supports compliance.

  • Be the internal go-to expert for NEC (National Electrical Code) considerations across product development.

What You'll Bring

  • Proven experience taking at least one grid-tied battery/inverter system from concept through full regulatory certification.

  • Deep familiarity with UL 1741, UL 9540, UL 9540A, UL 1973, and IEEE 1547—ideally with several of these standards committed to memory.

  • In-depth understanding of National Electrical Code (NEC) as it applies to energy storage systems and distributed energy resources.

  • Strong technical communication skills–you can translate complex regulatory language into actionable engineering requirements.

  • Confident navigating ambiguity and pushing back on overly conservative interpretations of standards when appropriate.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.

Our Values

We’re building a winning culture and we’re looking for people who are up for the challenge. Here’s what we expect from day one:

  • In-Person Only: We work full-time in the office. No hybrid. No remote.

  • Challenge the Status Quo: Question assumptions. Fix broken systems. Principles > rules.

  • Move Fast: Focus on what matters, act quickly, and learn by doing.

  • Give & Get Feedback: Be direct, be humble. Challenge ideas–including your own.

  • Own the Outcome: Take full responsibility. Deliver results. No excuses.

  • Act Like an Owner: Be resourceful, mindful of impact, and committed to the business.

  • Be Decisive: Drive clarity. Make bold calls with imperfect info.

  • Bring the Intensity: This is not a 9-to-5. We're building something hard which requires real commitment.
