What you'd be doing in this role
As Canva scales, change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun! This will give you a flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.
At the moment, this role is focused on:
- Developing and maintaining backend services related to storing and serving audio and video within Canva.
- Writing design documents for complex new feature initiatives and driving them to completion.
- Collaborating with owners, stakeholders, and engineers across multiple teams to ensure seamless integration and functionality.
- Providing technical guidance and mentorship to other engineers.
- Participating in code reviews, design discussions, and capacity planning.
- Providing periodic on-call support for services owned by the team.
You're probably a match if you have...
- 3+ years of industry experience developing web applications in Java.
- Knowledge of relational and non-relational databases (we use both!).
- Experience working in large distributed cloud environments, such as AWS.
- Experience managing systems operating at high scale and reliability.
- Strong foundation in computer science fundamentals (e.g., concurrency, data structures, distributed systems).
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within small groups.
- A passion for giving and receiving constructive feedback in design reviews and code reviews.
- Experience using AI assistants-and knowing when not to.
- Some experience with Terraform or infrastructure as code (IaC) is a plus!
About the team
The Media Platform Group's mission is to provide a world-class platform for every design ingredient and design template, on every device, wherever you are, whoever you are, at any time. We aim for consistent functionality across audio, video, images, templates, and fonts. We manage a fleet of services that ingest, process, store, track, and serve these ingredients.
The Audio/Video Team handles all incoming audio and video files. Growing this team is of critical importance to Canva as it accelerates the delivery schedules for multiple enterprise-critical projects such as our Digital Asset Manager and support for multi-regional storage.
With 200M+ monthly active users and 2,862,154,441 video uploads so far, our services run at astonishingly high levels of scale. We store large amounts of data with near-perfect reliability, while doing our best to manage infrastructure costs so we can continue to provide our services at low-to-no cost for users all over the world. We're always facing challenging and interesting problems. As we see it, if we do the same job twice, it should be automated the third time.
