About Us:
Observe is an AI-powered observability platform engineered for scale.
Built on an open, scalable data lake, Observe ingests and stores telemetry at dramatically lower cost while allowing reuse through open data formats like Apache Iceberg. Its Knowledge Graph tracks relationships between objects in the system—and how they change over time—providing essential context for investigations. Pairing agentic workflows with context from the Knowledge Graph, Observe’s chat-based AI SRE accelerates root cause analysis and resolution.
Engineering teams at Capital One, Topgolf, and Dialpad ingest hundreds of terabytes daily and troubleshoot 3x faster at 60% lower cost, depending on Observe to maintain reliability at scale.
Team:
The APM (application performance monitoring) team is responsible for building backend features for guided user flows. We are responsible for a large area of product domains, including: APM (service explorer, trace explorer), metric explorer, alerting, infrastructure monitoring (Kubernetes explorer).
The APM team deliverables are always motivated by direct product goals, which often include technical work on multiple backend stacks across the company. We produce fast-paced MVPs, as well as go deep into the computation platform to do sophisticated benchmarks and optimizations. You'll play a pivotal role in understanding the use cases and user journeys, and make them happen efficiently and performantly.
In this role you will:
Design, implementation, and project execution for product backends.
Own on various products domains, preferably become a long term owner and domain expert.
Collaborate closely with product and frontend teams to shape product behavior, supporting customers with advanced use cases.
Collaborate closely with other backend teams, to improve our computation platform (API backend, query language and compiler, query optimization, streaming data pipeline, etc.).
Product robust and practical tests and monitoring.
Qualifications
BS in Computer Science (or equivalent) and solid computer science fundamentals
2+ years of backend development experience
Backend generalist experience: comfortable working across backend and infrastructure stacks, even unfamiliar ones
Experience using Observability tools
Bonus Points
Well versed in driving projects: executing and navigating ambiguities.
Practical experience shaping products with user feedback.
Mastery of optimizing queries or data pipelines at scale.
Experience developing query/storage engine for metric and tracing products (TSDB, Prometheus, Jaegar, etc.).
Open to Staff and Principal level candidates.

What We Do
Observe was founded by Sutter Hill Ventures in November 2017. Our founding team came from leading Enterprise SaaS and software companies that work with vast quantities of data such as Snowflake, Splunk and Wavefront.
Our founding thesis was that the enterprises are data rich, but information poor. Data is siloed making it difficult to understand what’s going on inside applications and infrastructure. The result is often a poor customer experience and wasted engineering time tracking down incidents. Oh, and it costs a fortune.
Observe discerns why applications and infrastructure are running the way they are from the data they emit. We enable engineers to spend more time coding features and less time investigating incidents. We reduce outages and issues with customer experience. And we leverage an elastic cloud architecture so that you only pay for what you use.
