About Nomos

We strive to make energy free for European households. We achieve this by developing new energy products with Europe’s leading technology companies and embed energy as a cost-saving feature for electric vehicles, heat pumps, battery storage systems and more.

About the team

Started by Stefan and Nils in 2024, the Nomos team now consists of former researchers, founders and senior engineers united by a deep frustration of the current energy system and the vision to build a category leading enterprise out of Europe.

We strive to build a strong culture of effective communication, ownership and belonging. In this critical phase of our venture this translates to working in-person in Berlin Mitte with a group of people that value meritocracy, curiosity and craftsmanship.

What you'll do
  • Architect for the next order of magnitude. Nomos runs its own operating system: a modular billing engine, energy-market communication protocols, and a full accounting ledger. Every time we 10x our customers base, complexity increases significantly. Your job is to keep the architecture ahead of the growth, not chasing it.

  • Reduce complexity, don't manage it. The energy market is full of edge cases, legacy protocols, and shifting regulation. You deal with the complexity by approaching problems on high granularity and delivering clean abstractions. We measure complexity by how hard it is to ship the next feature. Your job is to make that number go down.

  • Move fast by building it right. We don't see speed and quality as a tradeoff. Cutting corners just means paying interest later. Invest to get it right the first time so the team moves faster in the months to come.

  • Raise the bar. You'll set engineering standards, review critical code, and hold the team accountable. When someone wants to merge a shortcut, you push back. When a pattern starts to erode, you catch it. This is a core part of the job, not a side responsibility.

Responsibilities
  • Design and evolve the systems that power Nomos: billing, procurement, metering, partner integrations, and the data pipelines that connect them.

  • Build for correctness, performance, and resilience. Always ask how something behaves at 100x - 1,000x the current load.

  • Use AI tools to accelerate where it makes sense: boilerplate, test generation, repetitive patterns. But own the architecture and the decisions. AI writes code. You decide what gets built and why.

  • Shape our engineering culture, tooling, and CI. Help recruit engineers who meet the bar you set.

Who you are
  • You've seen what scale looks like. You've operated backend systems at meaningful scale and know the difference between something that works in dev and something that holds up in production. You've felt the pain of bad abstractions and you build to avoid it.

  • You think in systems, not endpoints. You care about boundaries, data flow, and how things fail. You default to clean separation and explicit contracts, not because it's trendy, but because you've seen what happens without it.

  • You thrive in ambiguity. At our stage, half the job is figuring out what the job is. You're energized by that, not paralyzed.

  • You want your work to reach people. What we build directly shapes how millions of Europeans consume and interact with energy. You want to work on problems that touch everyday life and make the energy transition actually work.

  • You want a seat at the table, not just a seat on the team. We are a very small team. Every engineer has an outsized impact on what we build, how we build it, and where the company goes. You'll shape Nomos, not just work on it.

Why join us?
  • As an early member of our team you will shape the foundation of our company and benefit from the financial upside accordingly

  • Solve complex challenges powering Europe's energy infrastructure

  • No politics, instead passion, speed and customer obsession

  • We have a clear vision to radically transform one of the world's largest industries by building a category leader from Europe

  • Create the culture you always wanted. Actively shape our processes, setup and the way how we get things done

Skills Required

  • Experience managing backend systems at scale
  • Ability to design resilient systems with clear separation and explicit contracts
  • Experience using AI tools for coding efficiency
  • Strong understanding of energy market regulations and protocols
