Backend Engineer

The Backend Engineer is a pivotal role within the Technology Services group, designed to drive digital transformation and innovation in banking. You will be responsible for developing scalable, AI-powered applications and Generative AI (GenAI) solutions that enhance core banking processes and customer digital journeys. By integrating advanced analytics, conversational AI, and cloud-native architectures, you will build secure, modular systems that bridge the gap between complex data requirements and strategic business outcomes. This role requires a blend of technical mastery in modern frameworks and a deep understanding of banking operations to deliver high-impact enterprise platforms.

As the Backend Engineer, your responsibilities will include:

• Application Development: Design, build, and deploy full-stack, AI-powered web applications using microservices and RESTful APIs.
• GenAI Integration: Implement Generative AI engineering principles, including Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and agentic workflows, into enterprise-grade digital platforms.
• Architecture & Design: Create modular, scalable architectures and establish documentation standards and reusable templates for AI projects.
• Data Engineering: Design and implement robust data pipelines, pre-processing workflows, and governance frameworks to handle large, complex datasets.
• DevOps & Deployment: Manage containerization (Docker) and CI/CD pipelines to ensure automated, secure, and scalable deployments.
• Collaboration: Act as an "analytics translator" between business units and IT, coordinating with UI/UX teams, Data Scientists, and AI Engineers to align technical builds with business growth.
• Compliance & Standards: Adhere to all organizational policies, service standards, and procedural instructions to ensure consistent, high-quality delivery.

The key requirements for this role are:

• Proficiency in back-end frameworks (FastAPI, Flask, or Node.js) and front-end frameworks (React.js, Angular, or Vue.js).
• Strong grasp of GenAI engineering, LLM integration (Azure OpenAI), and RAG workflows.
• Hands-on experience with Azure or AWS ecosystems, including serverless deployments (Azure Functions/AWS Lambda) and cloud storage (S3, Blobs).
• Advanced coding skills in Python and JavaScript/TypeScript.
• Expert-level knowledge of Docker, container registries (ACR), and CI/CD automation.

You should also have the following:

• A Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field such as Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline.
• A minimum of 5+ years in professional software development.
• Proven track record in building scalable, secure web applications and integrating AI models within a cloud-native environment (Azure preferred).
• Advanced knowledge of banking operations, terminologies, and financial services products.

It would be preferable if you also have:

• The ability to analyse complex banking products and services to drive innovation and decision-making.
• Proven ability to translate complex technical/data requirements for non-technical internal stakeholders.
• The capacity to manage and motivate team members to contribute to change initiatives and continuous improvement.
• The ability to work effectively in an ad-hoc, fast-paced environment across different functional teams.
