Role Overview
We are looking for a Backend Engineer with strong experience in NestJS, Node.js, TypeScript, and PostgreSQL to build scalable, secure, and high-performance backend systems. The ideal candidate should have a solid understanding of backend architecture, API design, database optimization, caching, asynchronous processing, cloud services, and production reliability.
Key Responsibilities- Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services and REST APIs using NestJS, Node.js, and TypeScript.
- Build modular backend architectures using NestJS modules, controllers, services, dependency injection, guards, interceptors, and middleware.
- Design and optimize database schemas, queries, relationships, indexes, and transactions using PostgreSQL and Prisma ORM.
- Implement request validation, centralized error handling, consistent API responses, and API documentation using Swagger/OpenAPI.
- Develop secure authentication and authorization mechanisms, including JWT, RBAC, and permission-based access control.
- Implement caching strategies using Redis and asynchronous processing using messaging queues and background jobs.
- Integrate third-party APIs and external systems, handling authentication, rate limits, retries, timeouts, and failures.
- Optimize API performance, database access, resource utilization, and application scalability.
- Containerize applications using Docker and deploy backend services using Microsoft Azure.
- Implement structured logging, monitoring, distributed tracing, health checks, and other observability practices.
- Write automated tests, participate in code reviews, troubleshoot production issues, and maintain technical documentation.
- Collaborate with frontend engineers and other stakeholders to define API contracts and deliver end-to-end features.
Core Technologies and Architecture
- Strong proficiency in Node.js, TypeScript, and modern JavaScript.
- Hands-on experience with NestJS is mandatory, including modules, dependency injection, guards, interceptors, pipes, and exception filters.
- Strong understanding of REST API design, asynchronous programming, modular architecture, SOLID principles, and clean code practices.
Database and Caching
- Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL, Prisma ORM, schema design, migrations, transactions, indexing, and query optimization.
- Experience with Redis for caching, TTL management, cache invalidation, and performance optimization.
- Understanding of database consistency, connection pooling, and efficient data-access patterns.
API Development and Security
- Experience implementing DTOs, request validation, centralized error handling, and consistent API contracts.
- Familiarity with class-validator, class-transformer, and Swagger/OpenAPI.
- Understanding of authentication, authorization, JWT, OAuth 2.0, RBAC, API security, rate limiting, and secure secrets management.
- Experience handling pagination, filtering, API versioning, retries, and backward compatibility.
Cloud, Messaging, and Integrations
- Experience with Microsoft Azure or equivalent cloud platforms, with the ability to work with Azure services in production.
- Familiarity with Azure App Service, Azure Container Apps, Azure Database for PostgreSQL, Azure Service Bus, Azure Key Vault, and Azure Cache for Redis.
- Understanding of messaging queues, background jobs, event-driven architecture, retries, and failure recovery.
- Experience integrating third-party APIs and handling asynchronous workflows.
Performance and Engineering Practices
- Understanding of Node.js performance, concurrency, caching, database optimization, and scalability.
- Familiarity with structured logging, metrics, distributed tracing, health checks, and monitoring tools such as Application Insights or OpenTelemetry.
- Hands-on experience with Docker, Git, CI/CD, and automated testing using Jest or equivalent tools.
- Experience writing unit and integration tests and debugging application issues across development and production environments.
- Experience with microservices, event-driven architecture, domain-driven design, and clean architecture.
- Familiarity with advanced messaging patterns, idempotency, dead-letter queues, and distributed system reliability.
- Experience with GraphQL, webhooks, WebSockets, API gateways, or enterprise system integrations.
- Familiarity with Kubernetes, infrastructure as code, and Azure Functions.
- Experience building enterprise applications, SaaS platforms, multi-tenant systems, and role-based access control.
- Experience with AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code for implementation, debugging, refactoring, and testing, with the ability to review and validate generated code.
- Familiarity with monorepos, shared libraries, and CI/CD workflows.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and debugging skills.
- Writes clean, modular, secure, maintainable, and strongly typed code.
- Understands the reasoning behind architectural, database, and performance decisions.
- Takes ownership of features from design and development through testing and deployment.
- Communicates effectively and collaborates with frontend engineers, architects, and cross-functional teams.
