About the team
The Engineering team at BlueLabs supports application access, asset management, and broader operational logistics. We work with a number of internal stakeholders including the Data Science, Insights, Civic Technology, and Ripple teams. Our work supports the underlying infrastructure and data pipelines which allow the rest of the teams to conduct innovative analyses, propose innovative improvements in government operations, and hone messaging for important campaigns. We work in changing, ambiguous environments, so we embrace nuance, inclusivity, and complexity to deliver programs that work for the diverse groups of individuals who rely on us. Full Stack Engineer
About the Role:
Join the innovative team at BlueLabs and play a crucial role in powering the data-driven backend systems that fuel our success. We're seeking a Backend Engineer with a passion for building scalable, performant backend systems, data pipelines, and infrastructure to support a variety of internal and client-facing products. You'll work with cutting-edge technologies in a collaborative, results-oriented environment where your expertise will have a direct impact.
In this position, you will:
- Architect and develop robust backend systems: Design and implement highly scalable and efficient backend services using Python or Typescript (with Node.js).
- Optimize data pipelines: Build, maintain, and optimize data pipelines to transform and process large volumes of data for analysis and application integration.
- Enhance database performance: Design, tune, and maintain relational and non-relational databases to ensure optimal performance for our applications.
- Ensure code quality: Develop comprehensive unit and integration tests to guarantee the reliability and functionality of your code.
- Collaborate on infrastructure: Work with DevOps engineers to design and implement efficient CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes.
- Partner across teams: Collaborate closely with data scientists, product owners, and other engineers to translate business needs into technical solutions.

What we are seeking:
- 3+ years of experience: Hands-on experience building backend systems for web applications or data-intensive products.
- Expertise in backend technologies: Strong proficiency in Typescript (with Node.js), with a deep understanding of API design principles and best practices, additional experience in python preferred.
- Data engineering skills: Experience building and maintaining data pipelines using tools like Apache Spark, Kafka, or similar technologies.
- Database mastery: Solid understanding of relational (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL) and non-relational (e.g., MongoDB, DynamoDB) databases, including schema design and query optimization.
- Problem-solving mindset: Commitment to clean code, performance optimization, and pragmatic problem-solving.
- Collaborative spirit: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Security clearance: Ability to successfully attain and maintain a Federal Public Trust background investigation, including U.S. Citizenship or U.S. residency requirements.
Nice to Have:
- Cloud infrastructure: Familiarity with modern cloud architectures (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and deployment practices.
- DevOps experience: Basic understanding of infrastructure as code (IaC) and configuration management tools.
- Data analysis: Familiarity with Python or R for data exploration and analysis.
- Frontend fundamentals: Familiarity with JavaScript and modern frontend frameworks (e.g., React, Angular) is a plus.
