Officer position responsible for providing overall underwriting excellence through management for a product line. Ensures effective management and implementation of strategic objectives and policies for a product line, in accordance with the company's strategic plans.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
This is an officer level position responsible for providing overall underwriting excellence, effective management and implementation of strategic objectives and policies for the Global Auto & Worker's Compensation product line, in accordance with the company's strategic plans. This position will work closely with leaders across the enterprise to establish underwriting standards, guidelines, manuscript endorsements, forms and filings, pricing strategy, reinsurance usage, underwriting authority standards and the audit process. Additionally, the position will work with the Legal, Claims, Risk Control and Actuarial to analyze trends to promote profitable growth.
The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of Commercial underwriting experience in the applicable lines with exposure to guaranteed cost and loss sensitive plans. Individuals should have strong coverage knowledge in these lines as well as skill in assessing exposures to loss, loss analysis and pricing. The position will be responsible for the overall management, analysis and monitoring of a global portfolio. In conjunction with senior level management, you will work within the broadest limits of authority requiring the highest degree of technical complexity and coordination.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
1. Implements strategic objectives, underwriting strategies and best practices with substantial impact on the short-term success of a product line.
2. Ensures the achievement of continued profitability, growth and/or operational efficiencies for a product line through assessment of risk tolerance, market appetite and emerging risk issues.
3. Evaluates and drives underwriting quality and performance; includes rate, reserve adequacy, quality and coverage. Provides recommendations and develops plans to resolve issues.
4. Drives adherence to underwriting authority delegation, audit criteria and catastrophe management for a product line.
5. Participates in underwriting audits, collaborates with business units to review audit results, develop action plans; monitors effectiveness of action plans.
6. Handles complex or emerging hazard referrals, makes decisions on action, and gives feedback.
7. Collaborates with business partners in Business Units, Risk Control, Actuarial Claims and Legal to identify issues and inform recommendations and decisions related to underwriting practices.
8. Identifies need for underwriting direction and guidance, writes underwriting guidelines and directives to be easily consumable by field underwriters.
9. Provides guidance and direction in the development of underwriting and training tools; may develop and facilitate training, as needed.
10. May lead, direct and have full management accountability for staff in area of responsibility with an emphasis on talent management and succession planning in accordance with strategic direction.
11.May take lead responsibility for the development of underwriting strategies and position papers for emerging issues when assigned.
12. May maintain relationships with branches, brokers, agents, and customers to assess risk tolerance, market appetite and emerging issues.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
1. In-depth technical knowledge of underwriting theories and practices within auto and/or workers' compensation casualty lines and the insurance industry.
2. Ability to effectively interact and communicate with all levels of external and/or internal business partners within scope of responsibility, team and/or matrix environment.
3. Leadership and management skills, demonstrating integrity and professionalism.
4. Ability to drive results by identifying and resolving problems within scope of responsibility.
5. Excellent communication, negotiation, presentation skills and technical writing skills.
6. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software.
Education and Experience
1. Bachelor's degree with Master's preferred in a related discipline, or equivalent.
2. Typically a minimum of 10 years of related work experience in the product line, with at least five years in a similar role.
3. Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation, preferred.
