Location: Sugar Land Branch, Houston, TX 77479
Employment Type: Salary / Full Time – Onsite Only
Work Hours: Monday - Friday: 8:30am - 5:30 pm. Saturday: Occasional as needed

Role:

Responsible for the day-to-day leadership and oversight of the Credit Union's consumer underwriting function. Ensures consumer credit decisions are made consistently, timely, and in accordance with Credit Union policy, established risk appetite, applicable State and Federal laws and regulations, and sound lending practices. Provides leadership, coaching, and development to the consumer underwriting team and serves as the senior escalation point for complex or higher-risk credit decisions. Acts as an executive-level underwriter and provides support and recommendations regarding consumer credit policy, underwriting practices, portfolio risk, and lending strategy. Provides support to the Vice President of Consumer Lending and the Chief Lending Officer as requested.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the consumer underwriting department, including workflow, staffing, scheduling, service levels, escalation of issues, and credit decisioning processes. Monitor underwriting activities for efficiency, accuracy, consistency, policy adherence, and regulatory compliance.
  • Serve as an executive-level underwriter and primary escalation point for complex, higher-risk, or exception consumer credit requests. Review and decision credit requests above standard or senior underwriter authority within established lending authority and prescribed service-level expectations.
  • Lead, coach, develop, and evaluate consumer underwriting staff. Establish and monitor appropriate performance and quality credit metrics, identify training and development needs, and ensure underwriters maintain the knowledge and competencies necessary to consistently apply Credit Union lending standards. Maintain accurate statistical records of department activity and relevant information.
  • Monitor underwriting trends, policy exceptions, credit quality, and emerging risks. Review consumer lending policies, procedures, underwriting guidelines, and lending authorities and recommend appropriate changes to the Chief Lending Officer and senior management.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between Consumer Underwriting and lending channels regarding credit decisions, underwriting requirements, policy interpretation, escalated applications, and day-to-day underwriting issues. Provide credit and underwriting training to lending personnel as needed. Maintain system solutions for business issues related to underwriting to enhance service delivery. Responsible for all regulatory compliance within the Underwriting department.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills:Experience:

Five to eight years of similar or related experience that includes consumer loan underwriting, reporting, and team management that includes hiring, coaching, and training.

Education:

(1) A bachelor's degree, or (2) achievement of formal certifications recognized in the industry as equivalent to a bachelor's degree (e.g., information technology certifications in lieu of a degree).

Work involves extensive personal contact with others and is of a personal or sensitive nature. Motivating, influencing, and/or training others is key at this level. Outside contacts become important and fostering sound relationships with other entities (companies and/or individuals) becomes necessary and often requires the ability to influence and/or sell ideas or services to others.
