Automation Systems Mgr

Job Summary

The RD&E Manager, Automation Systems is responsible for research, plans, direct or designs of mechanical and electromechanical products for automation systems, and directs and coordinates other activities involved in design, fabrication, application, and installation of such systems. Supervises, guides, and trains automation systems staff.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Directly supervises employees in the Engineering profession and field service technicians.
• Interviews, hires, and trains employees; plans, assigns, and directs work and goals; appraises performance; addresses complaints and resolves problems.

Operations

• Research analyzes and formulates customer design proposals, quotations, and specifications.
• Performs applications engineering and other technical sales functions with customers.
• Designs products or systems such as instruments, controls, robots, motors, machines, and mechanical, thermal, hydraulic, or heat transfer systems.
• Plans and directs engineering personnel in the design and fabrication of machinery and equipment.
• Directs activities concerned with purchasing, manufacturing, final assembly and inspection, and shipment of equipment, and its installation.
• Ensures systems conform to engineering design and customer specifications including cost parameters.
• Evaluates field installations and recommends design modifications to increase system performance and eliminate machine or system malfunctions.
• Controls operating expenses within the overall engineering budget, reports out on budgetary performance annually. 
• Travel is required for trade shows, applications, engineering activities and routine customer contact, as needed.

• Comply with the EH&S Policy and applicable regulatory and company EH&S rules and requirements. 
• Report to supervisor of conditions or practices that are either unsafe or that may adversely impact the environment, to ensure prompt resolution of potential hazards. 

Product Safety and Quality 

• Follows Product Safety and Quality standards. 
• Follows GMP’s in regard to food contact packaging as it pertains to the employee. 
• Follows IPC product defense standards and complies with all SQF requirements. 

Minimum Requirements (include education, experience, special skills, licenses and/or certifications required.) • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field with 7 years related experience in analysis and design of mechanical systems.
• Experience managing a technical team preferred.
• Proficiency in CAD software, SolidWorks preferred.
• Proficient in Microsoft Suite, experience with CRM and sales applications such as SalesForce preferred.
• Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of standard deviation, correlation techniques, and sampling theory.
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
• Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. 
• PLC programming knowledge is preferred.
